Hours: 40 hours/week
Monthly stipend: $1125 monthly living stipend (before taxes) plus a $5500 educational award at end of service
The Thurston Conservation District is a voluntary, non-regulatory organization designed to assist landowners in managing the natural resources on their property. Along with technical assistance, the district has a variety of landowner and youth education programs, restoration projects and other services. The Environmental Stewardship and Outreach Coordinator will take on a unique role within the community by bridging the gap between landowners and education in all fields of natural resources management. This position is designed to inspire community connectedness: through volunteering that fosters a sense of environmental stewardship in youth and adults using a variety of specific outreach programs, and building and strengthening relationships between Thurston Conservation District, community organizations, and individual private landowners. The Coordinator will work to: coordinate the South Puget Sound Regional Envirothon competition; provide community outreach and education for the Clear Choices for Clean Water program; monitor and evaluate the success of restoration projects implemented by TCD; and implement the outreach plan for salmon recovery developed by the Lead Entity for Salmon Recovery, in addition to providing additional community education through a variety of other outreach events. The coordinator will also be responsible for organizing community support and volunteers for various restoration projects and outreach events.
Qualifications:
- Must be between the ages of 21 and 25 (by October 1, 2012)
- Must be willing to submit to a background check to work with children and volunteers
- Must have a valid Driver’s License and safe driving record
- Must be eligible to apply for AmeriCorps service (www.americorps.gov)
Preferred experience & skills include:
- Applicant must have a high school diploma/GED with an AA. A BA/BS is desired.
- Applicant must be will to work with cooperatively with staff, partners, volunteers and in diverse communities.
- Knowledge of environmental education and stewardship is desired.
- The applicant must be able to educate adults and youth on diverse subject matters; relay technical information to the community; be eager to learn new material and represent TCD at meetings; have excellent oral and written communication skills; possess basic computer and word processing skills; be proficient in MS Publisher and Excel or similar; have the ability to perform light field work in all weather conditions and be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds; be able to work in a team-oriented atmosphere and be self-directed; and possess excellent time and task management skills.
