Destinations

May 13th, 2011 · No Comments · 3. Sites, Student Travel Experiences

Between the different countries and across class levels within each country, distinct patterns emerged from field observation and from surveys about which kinds of destinations are appropriate to each of the age groups and for each country.

Surveys in Japan and Korea suggested real differences across the age groups. The largest groups of younger students went to key historic sites and national capitals. American students surveyed were on the US West Coast, so relatively few took trips to the nation’s capital. Evidence from school tours there comes from field observation. Older students in Japan went skiing and Korea went to Jeju Island and both went on very brief overseas trips.

American students were unusual in the relatively large numbers that traveled in groups in order to perform in public in some way.

The three countries shared two kinds of travel in common. All three sent older students out of the country, though younger American students did so larger numbers, particularly to Canada or Mexico. All three countries also gave students a chance to immerse in the natural environment. In Korea and the USA students specified that they were on environmental trips, affirming the wider cultural veneration of each of their natural environments. Japanese students spoke up about the novelty of Hokkaido’s cold and Okinawa’s warmth and the grandeur of Fuji.
