As part of Evergreen’s commitment to carbon neutrality, composting is a vital component to on-campus waste management practices. We provide small containers for compost collection in every sorting center in first year housing (A-D) and in every apartment in “The Soup” (E-S). Please use these containers as much as possible! When food waste enters the garbage stream, it releases methane gas instead of carbon dioxide, which pound for pound does 20 times more damage to the ozone. It is a small step, but it makes a big difference!

Right now, the food waste at Evergreen is collected and processed by Silver Springs Organics. Their compost system does not properly break down traditionally “compostable” utensils or dishes, so any plastics or biodegradable utensils should not be put in the compost.  However, brown paper napkins and bags can be composted.

There have been several composting projects started by students, such as Bokashi composting or vermicomposting. We are also using a compost pile to heat one of the MODS. Click here for more examples of student projects. Evergreen is also looking at partnering with Cedar Creek Correctional Center through the Sustainability in Prisons Project in the near future to manage our food waste. Stay tuned for future updates!
