Permaculture can be defined as an ecological model of cultivating food for humans and animals. Simply put, it is the practice of manipulating agricultural practices so they work with nature instead of against it.It is a social and environmental process. One must learn to spot and support relationships between different elements in one’s garden. In doing so, one can learn more about how they are connected to the greater environment. This alteration in food production practices can incite many levels of change. A Permaculture garden can seem, at first, to be feral. In fact, everything is highly constructed and thought through meticulously. Feral places do not yield lots of food for humans. Permaculture gardens do.
Edible forest gardens are an example of a common Permaculture practice.
Forests are naturally more resistant to destructive forces than, say, clear cut and tilled soil. They can also be manipulated to produce more food.
So, this is our attempt to follow those practices and create a stable environment that produces food. Building a forest takes years of work and we are continually looking for ways to improve our system. For example, we are working on re-establishing our edible mushroom patches. Feel free to visit the forest garden. It is by the Housing Community Center.
