Balinese Food Sculptures

Last week I participated in Bali’s 60+ Earth Hour in Denpasar. If you don’t know what it is, Earth Hour is a global initiative where people and iconic landmarks will shut their lights off for one hour. It’s a simple but powerful message to use less energy!

There were a few different vendors, one of which was Slow Food Bali, a super-cool food sovereignty project that has been going on for over 20 years!

An example of one of the projects that Slow Food introduced me to was a bamboo shoot development in a local community. They work with the community to startĀ tabah bamboo nurseriesĀ (since they grow fast and easy), harvest the bamboo shoots, create jobs for people to wash, peel and package the shoots, and then sell them. Bamboo shoots are rich in vitamins and minerals- some call them a superfood.

On another note, I saw these food sculptures and couldn’t help but post them!
