Nature Brushes

It is true that I have spent up to $20 on a single paintbrush before. And I’ll be the first to admit that it was worth every dime. One of my biggest pet peeves is an unkempt paintbrush, so by nature the brushes here at school drive me bonkers (picking up on that Aussie lingo now). Sustainably speaking, they’re not economical because they get destroyed, not to mention the bristles are made of plastic that harden after a couple of uses.

So of course, as eco artists, we decided to make our own brushes. They’re made 100% from plants, so for all of you vegans out there who don’t want to be painting with hog hair, this is your brush. We used the hairy sugar palm fibers for the bristles and bamboo branches for the handles. You simply make a cross split in the bamboo, shove the fibers in, wrap it up tight with string, and then trim the fibers to your aesthetic choosing.

These brushes don’t last forever… and that’s the point!
