Sketchbook 2015

When I’m not working with the students, doing yoga, swimming in the river, going on weekend adventures, attending a Green School meeting, or writing this blog, you can usually find me drawing in my sketchbook.

It’s interesting that when you go somewhere new, certain facets of yourself become so apparent that you wonder why you never noticed them before. It’s something about the combination of surrounding yourself with people who don’t know you (yet), taking in new & strange surroundings, reaching within and being inspired.

My Brazilian family always calls me the “resident artist” and at first I thought it was funny and sweet, but now I am starting to take this role a bit more seriously. When I lived in Olympia I worked at Painted Plate, a place known for it’s cheerful glow in the heart of downtown. I loved that I got to paint for my job. But more importantly, I loved when people would see something I made and it would bring a smile to their face. I saw that this was happening again the more I did arts here in Bali, whether it be goofy little signs, birthday cards, or welcome banners. So when I went to Singapore for my visa run, I decided to get a nice sketchbook that I could devote to making more drawings for myself.

The more I’ve been drawing, the more that I’ve wanted to draw. And amazing things are happening as a result! The more important of which is that I will be taking up a second internship in January with the high school arts teacher. She needs help developing a new program that makes her art class 100% sustainable and natural, including paints, paper, recycled supplies, etc. I’m so excited! I have already been assisting her in class and getting to know the students. I even helped them paint a mural in the Heart of School 🙂

Here are some images that I’d like to share from my journal.
