I went into the studio by myself to cover Gin Blossoms’ song Found Out About You. It was there for quite a long time and left unsatisfied with what I had recorded. Fortunately my classmate, Abby, offered to work together on this final project. The final prduct wouldn’t have been as fantastic without her help. We did another session where I re-sang the vocal parts, replayed the guitar solo parts, and added a small amount of toms. We mixed some that day and some more two days later. I”m not a fan of hearing my own voice, but we got through it.

Drop-In Assignment

Abbi and I worked on out drop-in assignment after class the other day. After listening to a few songs we decided to go with a track by Lykke Li. I had never heard of her, but I enjoyed the song. The process was fun. Abbi put down a drum track, which was off beat, but I didn’t want to hurt her feelings. I probably should’ve mentioned it, though. I put down an acoustic guitar track and a bass track. It turned out pretty OK.

For the first night of recording, my girlfriend came with and worked the recording button while I played piano then sang. I made the mistake of not taking pictures that night. Or maybe I took them on my girlfriend’s phone…

The second night I was by myself. I learned a lot and got to play the drums for the first real time! So much fun. It turned out pretty well.

Recording Amy

I was able to record my friend, Amy, while she played piano and sang. I used the Blumlein technique with two Fatheads underneath the piano. I didn’t really care for it in the end. I put the multi-use TS-1 mic looking into the piano. It was pleasant. For her voice I used a Sennheiser 421 and an AKG 460B. They were nice. Everything went well except one of the monitors wasn’t working. We both ended up playing Mad World together.

I was given the opportunity to work with Ryan once again! Yay. He, fellow student Ethan, and I decided to recreate all the audio for the Truck Ambush Trailer from The Last of Us. Ryan and I drove two hours to my hometown and grabbed some guns and my mother’s truck. We also headed to a nearby “shooting range” where the locals bring their junk to shoot it to kingdom come. We were able to get some excellent crashing and breaking sounds from a couple broken televisions, multiple glass bottles, and some metal objects. Ryan also recorded gun shots and reloading and unloading for personal use.

We did not have professional voice actors to use, so Ethan voiced Joel and Ellie and I voiced the “Injured” Man. I also played and sang the Hank Williams song that is featured throughout the trailer. If we had more time on this, I would have liked to re-amp the song through an older radio and record that unique, grainy sound. I enjoyed working on this project and I hope I can work with Ryan again on future endeavors.

Well I thought there was a lot to the Toft mixing board in the Audio Studio. Now, Terry (my new professor for Summer quarter) has us learning to use a BIGGER mixing board. At least this one has LED buttons which make it easier to see what is activated. Everything is a little confusing to me right now, but I think it’s because I haven’t really gotten a good look at the board. We’re crammed into a tiny space and must look over each other’s shoulders to see the board. So that’s a bummer.

I was able to record this cool, new, local (Olympia) band called Crack House. They were a fun group. My partner, Ryan, and I had a bit of trouble with Digital Performer (what’s new?), but figured it out and go to recording. Unfortunately, we novices of the studio and Toft mixing board couldn’t figure out how to send the vocalist’s voice to her headphones. We were also running out of time, and so were only able to record them all playing simultaneously. Ryan and I then each mixed our own versions of our vision of what the song should sound like.

Winter Project 1

Ryan Connelly and I waited forever to record something for our Intro to Audio project. We ended up with a cruddy-sounding recording, but it was a great learning experience.

The title gives it away, but I passed my test and can now use the audio recording room to work on projects!
