Asian American pop culture current crosscurrents.  I took this this class because I just decided to come back to college in early August, and the Sustainable Business class I came back to college to take.  Was full, and was only offered to Freshman and Sophomores.  Having to find a coarse that fit my interests, and would allow me to get my feet back under me after being out of school for a decade.  I found A-pop, boom, right up my alley.  Having been into the Asian culture an Japanese films, this program instantly peaked interest.

I took a Japanese film program here at evergreen in 2002, and it was pretty amazing.  Taught me the meanings behind the symbolization and story telling of the Japanese culture.  From the greats like Kurosowa and his masterpieces, to the newer directors like Beat Takeshi Kitano’s action packed thrillers.  Reading the oldest novel, Tales of Genji and really learning about cultures so much older than my own gave me a much larger and deeper outlook on life.  Even changed the way I look at things, seeing the beauty in small blades of grass or the way plants bloom for a short time.  And the way they make me feel at home when I see them.  Like the cherry blossoms in the spring do to some, or the Blue Bonnets of texas remind me of my youth in the south.  To watch seasons come and go with the different colors and the things those season bring to our lives.

I’m excited to learn more about the culture of the other folks brought to @merica in search of a different life.  And what that means to the melting pot of a country I call my home.
