Roland Rolls Geoducks Past Warriors, 1-0

SALEM, Ore. – With just 11 seconds remaining in regulation, junior Jeff Roland (Tacoma, Wash./South Puget Sound CC) put in the game-winner as the Evergreen Geoducks earned a 1-0 win over the Corban Warriors in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field in Salem, Ore.

The game-winner came at the 89:49 mark as Willie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) sent in a corner kick in the closing seconds and Roland one-timed  the attempted clearance from about 35 yards out, sneaking the ball into the upper-right corner for his third goal of the week and fourth of the season.

The Warriors dominated the game offensively, outshooting the Geoducks, 22-5, on the match but junior Mauricio Sanchez (Wenatchee, Wash./Wenatchee Valley CC) was a wall in goal, making six saves to collect the shutout.

With the win, the Geoducks clinch a spot in the postseason for the first time since 2005.  Evergreen also tied the school record for most conference wins in a season with nine, which was coincidently last achieved in 2005.

The Geoducks return home on Wednesday when they take on Warner Pacific on Evergreen Pitch, beginning at 3 p.m.

Geoducks Climb Past Mounties, 2-0, on Senior Day

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Taking the pitch for the final time at home, the Evergreen Geoducks earned their first win of 2012, defeating the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers, 2-0, in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer on Saturday afternoon at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

After a scoreless first half that saw EOU outshoot Evergreen, 7-3, the Geoducks went on the offensive in the second half and it paid off.  The Geoducks took the lead in the 73rd minute as junior Bianca Flores (Yakima, Wash./Yakima Valley CC) dribbled up the right and shot from about 25 yards out to beat EOU keeper Kailey Moss.

After the Mounties pressed forward and looked for the equalizer in the closing minutes, the Geoducks were able to take advantage of the extra space on offense as Sophie Krauza (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) crossed in a ball to Rayna Murphy (Longview, Wash./Mark Morris HS), who chipped it over Moss’s head for the 2-0 win.

Outshooting EOU 10-3 in the second half, the Geoducks finished with  13-10 advantage on shots.  Moss made four saves for the Mounties while Kaitlin MacKenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Shoreline CC) made three stops to collect the shutout.

The Geoducks hit the road next week  in the final weekend of play.  Evergreen will head to Portland, Ore. to take on Warner Pacific on Friday at David Douglas High School.

Evergreen Runs Well at Beaver Classic

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Running for the final time before the 2012 Cascade Conference Championships, the Evergreen Geoducks put together a strong performance at the Beaver Classic on Friday evening at Avery Park in Corvallis, Ore.

The Geoduck women were led by freshman Jamie Cummins (Lopez Island, Wash./Lopez HS), who took 45th with a time of 23:52 over the six-kilometer course.  Senior Ashley DiCristina (Prescott, Ariz./Brandshaw Mountain HS) took 96th, running an even 30:00 on the race.  Lindsay Allen of Nike Oregon won the race with a time of 21:36 while the University of Victoria took the team title with 22 points to finish 39 points ahead of University of Portland.

On the men’s side, Evergreen was led yet again by sophomore Aaron Jones (San Bruno, Calif./Capuchino HS), who finished 95th with a time of 27:48.  Les Jones (Tacoma, Wash./Mt. Tahoma HS) took 105th with a mark of 28:14 while brother Wes Jones (Tacoma, Wash./Mt. Tahoma HS) finished in 124th with a time of 29:15.  Zephyr Forest (Fairfax, Calif./Sir Francis Drake HS) took 142nd in a time of 32:44 while Drew Hawley (SeaTac, Wash./Mt. Rainier HS) was next across the line, taking 143rd in a time of 33:00.

As a team, the Geoduck men took 14th.  The eight-kilometer race was won by Matthew Clowes in a time of 24:22.  University of Victoria earned the men’s title as well, securing 34 points to finish 13 points ahead of second-place Southern Oregon.

Evergreen will have next weekend off before heading back down to Oregon on Nov. 3 for the 2012 Cascade Conference Championships, hosted by Warner Pacific College.

Cavs Stuff Geoducks, 3-0

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Putting down a total of 10 blocks, the Concordia Cavaliers swept past the Evergreen Geoducks, 25-12, 27-25, 25-9, in a Cascade Conference volleyball match on Friday evening at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

In the first set, Concordia used a number of runs to pick up the early advantage.  A six-point run put them ahead 15-5 and then a 5-1 stretch was enough to clinch the frame at 25-12 as the Cavs committed just two attack errors in the first set en route to a .346 hitting percentage.

The Geoducks came to play in the second set, staying right with the Cavaliers the whole frame.  CU attempted to pull away with a five-point swing that put them up 23-20 but Evergreen quickly tied it up as the two teams had to go extra.  Concordia finally wrapped up the set on a kill by Jackie Stein as they slipped by with a 27-25 win.

Concordia came out ready to close out the match in the third set and they were successful, sprinting past the Geoducks, 25-9, to clinch the match.  The Cavs had just six kills in the final frame but Evergreen struggled on the attack, posting 13 attack errors to allow CU to earn the sweep.

Evergreen was led by a solid match from junior Cassidy Watkins (Tucson, Ariz./Trevecca Nazarene Univ.), who finished with 13 kills and 12 digs on the night.  Sasha Nash (Sandy, Utah/Skyline HS) put up 26 assists on the night while Meredith Gurr (Tacoma, Wash./Tacoma CC) dug out 14 balls to lead the team.

Concordia was led by eight kills from Melanie Miller.  Lindsay Mangan added 29 assists for the Cavs while libero Kelsey Kai recorded 13 digs.  The Cavs had 31 kills with just nine errors on 97 attacks for a .227 hitting percentage.

The Geoducks remain at home on Saturday evening when they play host to Warner Pacific.  Concordia continues the road trip, traveling to Northwest to take on the Eagles.  Both matches are set for 7 p.m.

Yotes Dig Up Geoducks, 5-1

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Brittney Lacey scored twice as the College of Idaho Coyotes shot past the Evergreen Geoducks, 5-1, in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer match on Friday afternoon at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

The Yotes got on the board in the 18th minute after a foul by Evergreen in the box provided College of Idaho with a penalty kick and Lacey converted for the 1-0 lead.  C of I added another score shortly before halftime as Bri Blair sent in a corner in the 41st minute that found the forehead of Hallie Taufoou, who then directed the ball to the head of Jessica Ayala, who put it into the net for the 2-0 lead.

Evergreen finally responded in the 51st minute as Rayna Murphy (Longview, Wash./Mark Morris HS) dribbled up the left side and finished unassisted, firing the ball past C of I keeper Melissa Holmes-Joseph to cut the Yotes lead to 2-1.

It didn’t take much longer for the Yotes to build the lead back up to two goal as Sarah Hicks put a shot on net that was deflected over the head of Lauren Davidson for C of I’s third goal of the match.  College of Idaho continued to pull away in the 73rd minute as Lacey earned her second goal of the match, this time on the assist from Ayala, to push the lead to 4-1.  The final goal came in the 85th minute as Natasha Rooney sent a pass to McKenzie Anderson, who one-timed it from about 15 yards out for the score.

College of Idaho held a 16-11 advantage on shots, as well as a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks.  Holmes-Joseph finished with three saves for the Yotes before being replaced by Aimee Pierson in the 81st minute.  Kaitlin MacKenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Shoreline CC) had five first-half saves for the Geoducks while Davidson had one stop in the second half.

Evergreen wraps up the home portion of the 2012 schedule on Saturday when they play host to Eastern Oregon.  College of Idaho continues the road trip as they visit Northwest University in Kirkland, Wash.  Both matches are set for 3 p.m.
