On May 22, 2010 at the Loft on Cherry in downtown Olympia students in The Evergreen State College program ‘Life of Things’ will instigate an all-day community-wide romance with refuse.  The Material Life Festival celebrates junk in all of its creatively redeployed forms.  Through a series of workshops, participants will imaginatively up-cycle the dredged up detritus of consumer goods by turning fabric scraps into cloth bags, adding value to salvaged t-shirts through silkscreen printing, creating junk instruments, and fashioning sculptures from salvaged materials.  Children are invited to attend the festival’s Junk Camp, where they will assemble musical instruments, dolls, and other things from discarded plastics, paper, cloth, and string.  Festival exhibits will showcase local artists who work creatively with trash.  The festival will also promote a dialogue about fair trade, sustainability, DIY, the handmade movement, and material culture more broadly.  In the evening, the festival will host documentary film screenings, guest speakers, and live music.
