THE DEPARTMENT:
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is dedicated to protecting native fish and wildlife, and providing sustainable fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing opportunities for millions of residents and visitors. Working throughout the state, WDFW’s employees–field biologists, enforcement officers, land stewards, lab technicians, customer service representatives and others—manage hundreds of fish and wildlife species, maintain nearly a million acres of public wildlife lands, provide opportunities for recreational and commercial fishing, wildlife viewing and hunting, protect and restore habitat and enforce laws that protect fish and wildlife resources. This is to fill a part time 8-month non-permanent Fish and Wildlife Biologist 2 position in the Fish Program, Marine Fish Science Division. The duty station is located at the Natural Resources Building, 600 Capitol Way North, Olympia, WA.
DUTIES:
This position serves as part of a team of biologists responsible for implementing the Marine Fish Science unit’s Puget Sound-wide Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) survey and other field-based research. This position will work closely with research scientists and biologists in the Marine Fish Science unit, as well as collaborators at USGS and NOAA Fisheries. This position will be responsible for data recording, QA/QC, and digital archiving of project data
using various computer software programs. This position will conduct preliminary analysis of sample data, assist with advanced analysis, and be responsible for final project report. This position will review video sequences collected during field activities and design and implement novel video review techniques to facilitate development of sub-sampling procedures. This position will also evaluate Scientific Collection Permits and respond to public records requests. Working Conditions: Typical work includes a mix of office and field activities averaging 25 hours per week. Office activities include the use of computers for data analysis, database management, statistical analysis, and report writing. A substantial portion of office work will involve intensive review of video sequences collected in the field. Office duties also include aspects of contract management, purchasing, and administrative support of field activities. Field activities are generally scheduled around weather and tide windows and may occasionally involve overnight trips. Field activities include surveying and sampling throughout Puget Sound aboard marine vessels, heavy lifting up to 80 pounds, and coordination of sampling logistics with team members. Incumbent must possess a valid Washington or other State Driver’s License. Union: This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish and Wildlife Professionals (WAFWP). As a condition of employment you must either join the union and pay union dues, or the union a representational or other fee within 30 days of the date you are put into pay status.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science AND one year of professional experience in fish management or fish research, wildlife management or wildlife research, or habitat management or habitat research. Twelve semester or eighteen quarter hours of specific course work is required for certain positions.
OR
A Master’s degree in the applicable science will substitute for the required experience.
OR One year as Fish and Wildlife Biologist 1.
Equivalent education/experience. Preferred Qualifications: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Access. Working knowledge of ArcGIS software.
