JOB DESCRIPTION

Southwest Youth and Family Services works to create communities in southwest Seattle and King County in
which culturally and economically diverse families, youth and children thrive and prosper. In partnership with
families, schools and communities, we promote healthy family functioning, early childhood learning, student
academic success; and youth development.

As a member of the Development and Management Teams, the Development Director works to develop and
maintain a sustainable funding base for agency programs, including developing and strengthening key
individual donor and community funder relationships; leading fundraising efforts; and developing and
maintaining positive communication with individuals and community organizations though social and other
media.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. BA in related field and 5 years experience and training.
2. Thorough knowledge of and experience in nonprofit organizational development and operations.
3. Proven track record of success in obtaining funding through fundraising and donor solicitations.
4. Ability to work effectively in intermittently stressful, rapidly changing environment.
5. Very strong ability to communicate clearly in writing and speaking in English.
6. Strong ability to match writing and communications styles to differing needs, such as reports,
newsletters, public speaking and websites.
7. Strong ability to communicate in culturally competent manner.
8. Demonstrated familiarity with local funders and community institutions.
9. Ability to work comfortably and effectively with people and groups of varying racial, ethnic,
educational and class backgrounds and experiences.
10. Ability to work with and manage volunteers in a fundraising setting.
11. Experience in budget development and monitoring.
12. Demonstrated experience working with a variety of social media.
13. Ability to work independently and in teams as required.
14. Ability to produce documents in Microsoft Word and Excel, at a minimum.
15. Strong experience with fundraising software; experience with Bloomerang a plus.
16. Regular access to a working automobile and proof of insurance.
17. Willingness to consent to and ability to pass a criminal background check.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Development and Fundraising
a. Identifies and cultivates major gift prospects, and solicits major gifts in coordination with Executive
Director, board and other volunteers.
b. Partner with the Executive Director to manage his leadership and involvement in fundraising,
particularly major gifts
c. Coordinates efforts to continually inform, recognize and steward major donors.
d. Establishes and maintains contact with existing and potential financial supporters, including private
and public organizations, via personal contact and mass communications.
e. Manages annual fundraising events including planning, execution and evaluation, in coordination with
Development Director, board members, volunteers and consultants.
f. Initiate and implement community relations and donor cultivation events.
g. Work in coordination with Director of Program Development and Grants Funding to plan and execute
annual appeals and other projects such as the Seattle Foundation’s GiveBIG.
h. In coordination with Director of Program Development and Grants Funding and board development
committee, identify, plan and support implementation of new fundraising initiatives.

2. Community Outreach
a. Identifies and implements effective social media efforts, including maintaining and updating the
organization’s social media efforts.
b. Serves as social media lead; communicates with departments and staff to generate content.
c. Coordinates or produces internet/intranet content, graphical and multimedia displays and
communications.
d. In coordination with Director of Program Development and Grants Funding, prepare and distribute
agency annual report.

3. Administration and Recordkeeping
a. Staff Board of Directors’ Development Committee
b. Monitor and evaluate progress toward fundraising goals, prepare reports for the board and recommend
changes or additions to the plan, as needed.
c. In coordination with Director of Program Development and Grant Funding, maintains current and
accurate donor and fundraising data base, including data entry, development of protocols, and creating
reports as needed.
d. Manage and produce acknowledgements and thank you letters for individual and community group
cash and in kind donations.

4. Leadership & Management
a. Serve as active member on management team; attend management team meetings as a work priority.
b. Participate actively in development of agency and program policies and procedures.
c. Maintain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of agency policies and procedures.
d. Serve as resource for other management team members in problem solving, and development and
implementation of agency and program policies and procedures.
e. Assist other staff members in developing written materials regarding management issues as needed and
requested.
f. Function as “agency management” as needed in absence of Executive Director, in conjunction with
other management team members.
g. Represent Southwest Youth and Family Services in community forums, meetings and other
environments as needed, or requested by Executive Director.
h. Other duties as assigned by Executive Director.
