Marstel-Day, LLC, an Environmental Consulting and Planning firm, is seeking highly motivated GIS Interns (one or more) with a strong commitment to a conservation ethic and a strong desire to identify and support strategies for natural resource conservation and community planning; and a commitment to use “green” best management practices in the performance of their work in the Company’s Oakland, CA office on a variety of projects, primarily in support of the company’s environmental and natural resource, community planning and sustainability efforts. The company intends to hire at least one GIS Intern, but may hire more depending on the overall qualifications of the submitting applicants and the on-going workload.
Duties:
The selected intern(s) will work on one or more projects under the guidance of staff members and also independently, depending on the specific project(s). The selected intern(s) will perform data mining and data organization tasks; Perform spatial analysis on a wide variety of datasets; Support other GIS staff with project tasks and; Create maps and reports for delivery to clients.

Education, experience, training:

To be strongly considered, the GIS candidate must:
Possess a strong commitment to a conservation ethic and a strong desire to identify and support strategies for natural resource conservation and community planning; and a commitment to use green best management practices in the performance of work;
Be pursuing, or have recently graduated with, a BS/BA in GIS, Computer Science, Geography, Planning, Environmental Science or other related disciplines. Have a GPA of 3.4 or better.
Have a minimum of one year of applicable GIS training (i.e., completion of at least three semester-length GIS courses). Possessing a GIS certificate is a plus.
Have worked with ESRI ArcGIS 10.1 or higher for a minimum of one year;
Possess familiarity with both raster & vector files;
Have high confidence in his/her abilities to create and correct polygon topologies, attribute updates and custom maps
Possess considerable knowledge of the following: Geo-database usage and creation; locating, classifying, organizing, and analyzing data; creation of spatial data and attributes; and satellite ortho-imagery and labeling techniques.
Be able to create feature classes, shape files and attribute tables;
Possess or be in the process of developing knowledge of Visual Basic, Python, or other GIS related scripting language;
Have strong oral and written communication skills;
Have the demonstrated ability to work independently and in teams;
Possess strong attention-to-detail, initiative, and self-motivation;
Have strong organizational skills; and,
Be eligible to work in the U.S. (DHS Form I-9 must be completed by the incumbent and submitted to DHS for verification of citizenship and eligibility through E-Verify)

Compensation and Hours:
The GIS Internships will be non-regular, full- or part-time positions for a fixed period. Compensation for a fulltime position (40 hours per week) will be a fixed stipend of $2,600 per month with the hourly rate equivalent being $15.00/hr. Performance of weekly hours will be flexible to accommodate class schedules. The company will consider internships of fewer than 40 hours per week depending on the selected candidate’s skills, availability and the available workload, for which the amount of the stipend would be adjusted proportionately. The position is considered a “non-exempt” position under the Fair Labor Standards Act and any overtime on a weekly (or daily where required) would be paid beyond the stipend.

Essential Functions Description:

The incumbent will normally work in an indoor, climate controlled work station or office, but be frequently required to travel to various other sites and/or offices which may not be climate controlled; to manage and coordinate work by scheduling and undertaking frequent airline, train or vehicle travel. Incumbent will be required to frequently organize and coordinate schedules, analyze and interpret data, and engage in fast-moving problem solving; communicate quickly and precisely with coworkers and clients, craft written communication including the use of e-mail and other electronic reproduction of words, graphs, and photos. Incumbent will be required to make regular use of and be proficient with computers, telephones, mobile communication devices, copy machines and printers.
