Duties:
 

Accidental spills of dangerous materials and past business practices have contaminated land and water throughout the state. The Toxics Cleanup Program (TCP) works to remedy these situations, which range from cleaning up contamination from leaking underground storage tanks, to large, complex projects requiring engineering solutions. Our mission is to get and keep contaminants out of the environment.
The program’s Policy and Technical Support Unit in the Information and Policy Section in Lacey, WA is looking for a Toxicologist 3.
Upland and sediment cleanup sites may significantly impact the health of communities that reside on or adjacent to these sites. The person in this position independently prepares or evaluates human health and ecological risk assessments and cleanup level determinations for individual upland and sediment cleanup sites.
Tasks include:
  • Employs applied toxicology and risk assessment experience to evaluate risk assessment workplans and reports for individual cleanup sites.
  • Independently researches non-routine toxicological issues that must be resolved in order to complete reviews, reports, workplans or cleanup level determinations.
  • Interprets toxicological studies and other technical information relevant to evaluating risks posed by hazardous substances present at upland and sediment cleanup sites.
  • Provides technical assistance to Ecology site managers and lower level toxicologists to ensure that evaluation results are clearly and effectively communicated to liable parties, stakeholder groups and Ecology staff and managers.
Provides technical support and training for Ecology site managers, consultants and other agencies on Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA) and Sediment Management Standards (SMS) risk assessment topics.
Tasks include:
  • Develops guidance and training materials for risk evaluations and cleanup level determinations required under the MTCA and SMS rules.
  • Conducts training and lectures for site managers, peers and consultants.
Independently reviews new scientific information and provides recommendations for resolving major science policy issues.
Tasks include:
  • Independently conducts research or assessments to support resolution of major/non-routine toxicological issues associated with risk assessment requirements in the MTCA and SMS rules.
  • Represents the program on cross-program and multi-agency work groups dealing with toxicological issues relevant to the MTCA and SMS rules.

 Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

A Master’s of Science or Master’s of Public Health degree in Toxicology, exposure science or an ecology-related biological science AND four years of experience related to ecological and/or human health risk assessment (for example; Toxicology, risk assessments, bioassays).
OR
A Ph.D. degree in Toxicology exposure science or an ecology-related biological science AND three years of experience related to ecological and/or human health risk assessment (for example; Toxicology, risk assessments, bioassays).

Desired Qualifications

Experience and expertise evaluating human health risks associated with hazardous substances in upland and aquatic environments.
Experience and expertise in preparing statistical evaluations of environmental data.
Experience working with state and/or federal cleanup sites.
Experience working on sediment cleanup issues.
Working knowledge of the Model Toxics Control Act Cleanup Regulation and the Sediment Management Standards.
Experience providing training on scientific and regulatory issues.
