Working in Ecology’s Hazardous Waste and Toxics Reduction program, the Communications Consultant 3 will support our efforts to advance innovation and reduce the use of toxic chemicals in Washington. This position will work with Ecology’s green chemistry initiative on business outreach, education, and research. We want to tell the story of businesses that are leading the way in creating safer products and developing safer chemicals, grow our state’s green chemistry capacity through education, and explain to the public how safer chemistry helps to protect our communities and our environment.

 Duties:
The mission of the Hazardous Waste and Toxics Reduction (HWTR) Program is to foster sustainability, prevent pollution and promote safe waste management.  This position contributes to HWTR’s mission by promoting and publicizing programs that focus on sustainability and pollution prevention.

As a Communications Consultant in the Hazardous Waste and Toxics Program, this position will work independently and under general direction to lead or coordinate the following types of communication activities:

  • Determine and conduct the most appropriate methods, techniques and events to publicize and promote Ecology’s green chemistry initiative. Work with businesses to receive recognition for efforts to reduce the use of hazardous substances through the Safer Chemistry Champion Awards. Write, edit and lay out materials to support agency education and outreach programs.
  • Assist in the implementation of the Local Source Control (LSC) Program marketing and outreach strategy.
  • Determine and conduct the most appropriate methods and techniques to publicize and promote HWTR’s technical assistance services (including TREE and ‘Lean and Green’) to potential technical assistance customers and business associations.


This is a project position that is expected to be funded until December 31, 2017.

 

 Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, humanities, public relations, or related field and three years of writing/editing experience; or equivalent education/experience.

Position-specific competencies

  • Experience selecting and conducting appropriate methods and techniques to publicize and promote programs
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve complex issues or problems
