The Department of Ecology is looking for an experienced environmental professional, scientist and effective manager to join our Air Quality program management team as the Science and Engineering Section Manager.

The successful candidate will play an important role within a leadership team in how our state, region and nation respond to air quality issues including climate change. If your career has focused on protecting, preserving and enhancing the environment or public health, this may be the position for you. The Air Quality program management team members are strategic thinkers. We influence state and federal clean air law and major policies with strong science and develop plans, policies and agreements on air quality issues with state and national significance. The Science and Engineering Section Manager leads the development and analysis of Air Quality data and analysis to understand and respond to high-profile, technically complex environmental issues. We work in a fast paced, politically-sensitive environment while balancing competing public demands.

The successful candidate will manage a biennial budget of approximately $2 million and is accountable for supporting, managing, and coordinating the section’s professional and technical staff. The position manages a section of 12 environmental specialists, environmental engineers, toxicologists and atmospheric scientists. This talented and seasoned team works collaboratively with headquarters and regional team members and external stakeholders to accomplish the following:

Required Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree or higher in environmental studies, environmental engineering, physical or biological sciences or related field. AND Five years of environmental project management, regulatory or technical experience. A minimum of 18 months supervisory experience managing technical staff. Knowledge of advanced principles of management, budget planning, strategic planning, environmental or environmental health science and personnel administration. Ability to decipher multiple local, state, and federal laws and regulations regarding environmental management and administrative procedure requirements. Desired Qualifications: A master’s degree or higher in environmental studies, environmental engineering, physical or biological sciences or related field. And At least two years air quality-related project management, regulatory or technical experience. Three years experience supervising technical staff in a complex political environment.
