Description:
OVERVIEW:

The Center for Earth Leadership trains, empowers, and supports individuals to be agents of change in building a sustainable local culture. The Center has a regular staff of four, plus volunteers who assist in program delivery.

To provide ongoing support for trained parents leading green initiatives at school, years ago the Center formed the Portland Eco-School Network (ESN). During school year 2014-15, 35 parents were active in the Portland Eco-School Network, working as volunteers in 20 Portland elementary schools. Following the Portland model, the Center has also formed networks in Beaverton, Corvallis, Eugene, and Salem.

The Eco-School Network Coordinator, working closely with Co-Founder Jeanne Roy, will (1) recruit, train, and support Portland and Beaverton ESN parents and (2) provide limited support for the other networks.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Because the Center is a small nonprofit, areas of responsibility may shift based on program needs. Below is an estimate of how time will be spent.

1. Eco-School Networks (at least 50%). The Coordinator will (1) assist the co-director in organizing leadership trainings for new Eco-School Network parents, (2) provide staff support and regular communications for the Portland and Beaverton Networks, and (3) assist the co-directors in supporting the distant ESNs. The role will include the following: (a) facilitate meetings; (b) communicate with ESN members by phone, email, and newsletter; (c) assist with trainings—prepare materials, send email reminders, and manage our online communication tools; (d) maintain the ESN database; and (e) execute strategies to maintain ESN vitality over time.

2. Agent of Change Network. Since 2006, over 1,000 adults have been trained by the Center in our “How to Be an Agent of Change” sustainable leadership training. To provide ongoing education, support, and inspiration, the Center invites graduates to participate in the Agent of Change Network, which holds periodic gatherings and field trips. The Coordinator will assist in recruiting new participants, holding trainings, and administering Network events.

3. Other. Outside of school, we motivate adults to assume the naturalist-mentor role in the life of a child within their family or neighborhood through our workshop, “Being a Naturalist in the Life of a Child.” The Coordinator will oversee scheduling, outreach, and material preparation for this program. On occasion, the Center plans workshops, field trips, or small events. The Coordinator will assist in planning for these activities.
