Position title: Outdoor Recreation and Intramural Coordinator

Work Schedule, Salary/Wage: Part-time, Nonexempt, 20 hours per week for 10 months August -May; $1,375 paid over 10 monthly, $13,750 annually

Position summary:

The Outdoor Recreation and Intramural Coordinator is responsible for the shared development, implementation, and supervision of a comprehensive outdoor recreation and intramural sports program which meets the needs of a diverse university community. The Coordinator promotes opportunities for student involvement through organized outdoor recreation trips and a robust intramural program consisting of several team sports.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Director of Campus Life to provide leadership for Campus Life programs and events. This includes oversight of an extensive outdoor recreation calendar involving several planned trips per month, a seasonal intramural sports program offering flag football, volleyball, soccer, and others, as well as individual recreational games open to staff and faculty.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate a student staff of 2 coordinators and 15-20 student referees including the recruitment and hiring process, leadership training facilitation, and safety and compliance training.
  • Provide on-site supervision of the intramural program and individual off-campus outdoor recreation trips.
  • Manage the intramural team rosters, game scheduling, referee training and selection, staff schedules, sporting equipment purchasing and maintenance, facility reservations, and facility care and management.
  • Collaborate regularly with the Recreation Center and Athletics staff to ensure proper use of all facilities, proper documentation of any injuries or incidents, and to communicate any shared staff concerns.
  • Collaborate with the Director and Assistant Director of Campus Life to implement large Campus Life programs and initiatives, such as WOW-Weeks of Welcome, Late Night Jam, and others as necessary.
  • Develop and implement a Saint Martin’s spirit campaign to engage students and encourage involvement at athletics events, Campus Life programming, and general campus activities/events.
  • Manage the Saints Adventure program including monthly rock climbing events, ski trips, sports outings, and other outdoor recreation programs.
  • Conduct ongoing and annual assessment of student programs and report results and prepare annual report summary.
  • Develop a risk management plan and provide a system of documentation for injuries or incidents that may occur through participation in outdoor recreation and intramural activities.
  • Manage the intramural program budget effectively assuring fiscal responsibility of student funds.
  • Represent the Student Services Division on a variety of campus-wide committees.
  • Conduct business in a manner compatible with Saint Martin’s philosophy and mission.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Campus Life.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in sports management, exercise science, education, or any related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Master’s Degree in student affairs, higher education, sports management, exercise science, education, or any related field from an accredited college or university (Preferred).
  • Experience with outdoor recreation and intramural programming.
  • Experience working in a college environment with college students.
  • Current Certification in one of the following: American Heart Association BLS Instructor, Heartsaver First Aid Instructor, American Red Cross Lay Responder First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor, Lifeguarding Instructor, CPR/AED Professional Rescuer Instructor (or willingness to gain certification upon employment).
  • American Heart Association BLS Instructor Trainer. (Preferred)
  • American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguarding, Lay Responder Instructor Trainer. (Preferred)
  • Successfully pass a criminal background check.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to show maturity and professionalism when dealing with student confidential and sensitive personal, academic or developmental issues.
  • Demonstration of strong interpersonal and problem solving skills in facilitating and maintaining collaborative relationships with students, campus constituents and the public.
  • Demonstrated experience with intramural sports programs and outdoor recreation.
  • Capable of working an alternative work schedule in a fast-paced, student-oriented environment; providing a regular presence at campus programs and activities (evenings and weekends required).
  • Ability to ensure compliance with prescribed operating procedures/policies, safety standards, and legal and liability issues.
  • Strong organizational and administrative abilities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be supportive of a Catholic, Benedictine philosophy of education.
