Fish Biologist w/ NOAA – Newport, OR/Seattle, WA

 

NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is responsible for the management, conservation and protection of living marine resources within the United States. NOAA Fisheries also plays a supportive and advisory role in the management of living marine resources in coastal areas under state jurisdiction provides scientific and policy leadership in the international arena and implements international conservation and management measures as appropriate.

 

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

 

Plan and coordinate stock assessment activities relating to west coast groundfish.

  • Serve as a point of contact and spokesperson for FRAM on groundfish stock assessment planning, vis-a-vis the Pacific Fishery Management Council family, other NMFS offices, and the general public.
  • Serve as FRAM Division’s point of contact for assessment-related data calls.
  • Update national databases with results from west coast groundfish assessments.
  • Assist in prioritizing and planning assessment-related research, including science workshops.
  • Present assessment-related findings at Council meetings, conferences, and symposia, as appropriate.

 

Plan and coordinate peer-review meetings for west coast groundfish science products and methods.

  • Serve as FRAM Division’s peer review coordinator, with responsibility for submitting requests for peer reviewers, organizing review meetings for assessments and other science, and ensuring that logistical needs are met.
  • Serve as the NW Fisheries Science Center’s point of contact for peer-review data calls and planning, and serve on agency working groups related to peer review, as needed.
  • Conduct initial reviews of assessments to ensure conformance with Terms of Reference.
