Hydrologist/Soil Scientist w/ USDA – Tuscon, AZ

The position is located in the Southwest Watershed Research Center (SWRC), Tucson, AZ. The mission of the Center is to develop knowledge and technology to conserve water and soil in semi-arid lands. The primary purpose of the position is to provide professional scientific support and conduct research to develop principles, practices, procedures and related soil/water criteria.

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Carrying out experiments related to soil and water management in arid and semi-arid rangeland environments.
  • Developing soil and sediment sampling techniques for Caesium-137 isotope laboratory analysis addressing routine problems of sampling in high spatial variability conditions found in rangeland environments.
  • Conducting rainfall simulator experiments to quantify relationships between runoff and erosion processes and ecological site characteristics in support of the national effort to develop ecological site reports.
  • Utilizing gamma ray spectrometer instrumentation and techniques to quantify isotope concentrations of Caesium-137 and Lead-210.
  • Collecting and preparing soil and sediment samples in the field or laboratory.
  • Running models of rainfall, infiltration, runoff, erosion, and sediment yields using data collected from the experiments, interpreting model results.
