Job Overview:

The Major Taylor Project Coordinator is a full-time salaried position that coordinates the Major Taylor Project, a year-round youth development cycling program. The Major Taylor Project Coordinator is responsible for scheduling and coordinating project activities for high school aged students in South and Southeast Seattle. The Major Taylor Project Coordinator works to introduce youth from diverse communities and backgrounds to recreational cycling and self-empowerment through the Major Taylor Program. The Coordinator’s work helps create an inclusive culture of bicycling. The Coordinator is also responsible for managing and supporting a team of eight Ride Leaders.

The Major Taylor Project Coordinator works in High Schools with diverse groups of students to empower and transform youth through bicycle rides, mentoring, classes, field trips and retreats. Through the Major Taylor Project, students will be prepared to ride on the 2-day, 200 mile Seattle to Portland bicycle classic. The Coordinator is responsible for outreach to and retention of students for the Major Taylor Project, as well as strategically growing the program. Occasional evening and weekend work is a necessary part of this job, as well as the ability to ride a bike. Strong candidates are exceptionally organized, passionate people with excellent communication skills, facilitation and project management experience, as well as a high level of bike riding and mechanical aptitude.

60% Coordination and administration for Major Taylor Project

20% Time spent with students leading meetings, outings, classes, rides

10% Managing and coordinating with Ride Leaders

10% Other duties as assigned

Department Overview:

The Major Taylor Project is a year-round, youth development cycling program produced by the Cascade Bicycle Club’s Diversity and Inclusion Department. The Major Taylor Project Coordinator reports to the Director of Diversity and Inclusion. The Major Taylor Project Coordinator is an integral member of the three-person Diversity and Inclusion team at the Cascade Bicycle Club. In addition, the Major Taylor Project Coordinator will work with the Major Taylor Project team, a group of passionate community partners, teachers, volunteers, Cascade staff and AmeriCorps members to collaboratively develop a better community through bicycling.

Founded in 1970, the Cascade Bicycle Club is a 15,000+ member nonprofit organization based in Seattle, Washington, dedicated to creating better communities through bicycling. Cascade is a local and regional leader in producing world-class cycling events and rides, educating youth and adult cyclists, advocating for bicycle policy and infrastructure and promoting bicycle commuting. Cascade produces 13 major bicycle events and offers 2,000 free daily recreational rides annually. Cascade’s sphere of influence includes health and fitness, youth development, environmental sustainability and livable communities. Cascade is directed by an elected, volunteer board and operates with 35 paid staff and hundreds of volunteers.
