Evergreen’s 2016 Daniel J. Evans Chair Lecturer in Liberal Arts is Dr. Donna Haraway, Distinguished Professor of History of Consciousness at UCSC. She will speak April 13th from 11:15AM–1PM as part of the Anthropocene Lecture Series, a coordinated studies series with multiple participating programs in the sciences and the humanities.

The talk will ask, to paraphrase Dr. Haraway, what it means to inherit the histories of companion species on a blasted earth where getting on together is still the task. Her upcoming book works through ontological, ethical, and ecological knots in multispecies contact zones, where human exceptionalism gives way to the “open” of companion species. An audience question and answer session will follow.

The presentation is free and open to the public. It will take place in the Communications Building Recital Hall (Com 107), with overflow seating in the Experimental Theater (Com 124). Due to anticipated heavy attendance, faculty who want their students to hear the lecture should contact Ruth Hayes to make arrangements.

The Daniel J. Evans Chair position is dedicated to bringing scholars to Evergreen to share knowledge with the learning community, with a special focus on Evergreen’s first year students. The chair honors Dan Evans, the former Washington governor, U.S. senator and the college’s second president. Hiring Deans coordinate the Evans Chair. If you would like to propose a candidate for a future Evans Chair position, please contact the sitting Hiring Dean at that time.

This year’s planners for Dr. Haraway’s visit are Ruth Hayes, Miranda Mellis, Sarah Williams, Tricia Bateman and Nancy Murray. Poster by Jesse Lortz.
