There is currently a permanent Fish Hatchery Specialist 3 position in the Fish Program, Hatchery Division, Priest Rapids Complex.  The duty station is the Ringold / Meseberg Hatchery located at 10871 Ringold River Rd., Mesa, WA 99343

Duties

Fish Culture
Carries out sound fish culture practices to meet program goals.
Identifies and communicates opportunities to improve fish culture practices.
Projects and monitors fish growth and feed requirements.
Monitors fish behavior and health.
Actively seeks to learn new fish culture practices.
Administers therapeutants, calculates and administers drugs as prescribed.
Monitors egg and fish production
Performs fish inventories, splits, grading, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and pland

Crew Leader
Carries out assignments as a working leader.
Monitors projects/activities to ensure completion in a timely manner.
Ensures that the staff is productive and well informed on activities.
Ensures safety compliance.
Serves as a leader and role model for staff.
Demonstrate, instruct or train others in methods, procedures and how to complete tasks.

Physical Operation and Maintenance of Facility 
Ensures that working components of the fish hatchery are kept in good condition (i.e. pumps & motors, vehicles, alarms, generators, flashlights)
Ensures timely repairs to facility and infrastructure.
Maintains the grounds in appearance and upkeep to include seasonal issues.
Identifies and communicates ways to improve the physical plant operation.
Actively identifies safety hazards and takes action or recommends remedies as appropriate.

Communications 
Keeps supervisor and management well-informed on production issues that may lead to fish health concerns or program shortfalls.
Disseminates information from management and supervisor in a positive light that leads to compliance and team building.
Serves as a conduit for safety concerns (management to staff and staff to management)
Represents the agency professionally and communicates effectively.
Communicates with outside entities to implement agency-approved projects.

Data Collection, Entry and Reporting 
Tasks include:
Leads others at the facility in collecting, compiling, and reporting all pertinent data
Required by the program, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
Maintains a facility filing system that is well organized and user-friendly.
Ensures that staff are well informed on where and how to collect and record data.
Leads others in accurately collecting and recording data.
Demonstrates proficiency in use of personal computers and various applications.
Working Conditions
Working hours are normally an 8-hour-day, 5 days per week but can vary according to the needs of the program and resource. Normally does not exceed 40 hours per week unless emergency conditions exist and some holidays.
This position requires the ability to work closely with complex staff, constituent groups, anglers, other agencies and intra agency staff; these include area and district biologists and fish health staff, USFWS and public utilities as well as tribal and other federal, county, state entities and vendors in a professional manner.
This position requires some ability and willingness to learn too service, repair and operate safely various forms of hatchery related equipment and implements to include ATV’s, UTV’s, tractors, trailers, skid steers, rough terrain forklifts, backhoes, excavators, dozer’s, and implement’s or equipment attachments, spray equipment, lawn mowers, hatchery vehicles, pumps, generators and other rented or borrowed equipment at this facility. In addition this position will require some basic knowledge or general understanding of electrical, plumbing, welding and construction. It is also required of this position to have some basic knowledge of various types of power and hand tools, their applications and demonstrate safe use.
The preferred candidate will have a CDL and a pesticide license or the ability to obtain both licenses within 12 months of hire.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the State of Washington, Department of   Fish and Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish Hatchery Professionals (WAFHP), which contains a “union security” provision. This means that, as a condition of employment you must either join the union and pay union dues, or pay the union a representational or other fee within 30 days of the date you are put into pay status

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries or closely allied field and two years of hatchery experience, OR successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school and two years of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.  Six years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience.

Proper calibration and operation of measuring instruments
Knowledge of hatchery forms; application and use of key forms; proper procedures, etc.
