This position is located in the Eastern Region Regional Office, Public and Governmental Relations Staff in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

This position serves as the Director for Public and Government Relations and is responsible for planning, organizing and directing overall strategic communications programs.  Developing and implementing communication plans to inform publics of ongoing initiatives.  Promotes and maintains relationships with elected officials, special interest groups and representatives of the media.  Oversees the Eastern Region’s Urban Connections and conservation education programs.  Analyzes public reaction and public opinion to ongoing initiatives and recommends changes to methods to improve understanding of regional direction, and to relate regional policies with public interests.

Duties

Duties of the Director of Public and Government Relations include:

  • Plans, organizes and directs overall strategic communications programs in support of Forest Service mission, projects and programs in the Region.
  • Develops and implements communication plans to inform affected publics of ongoing initiatives; and contingency plans to provide continuous, timely and accurate information addressing complex, critical and sensitive regional and national issues.
  • Promotes and maintains relationships with elected officials, special interest groups and representatives of the media. Manages the Region’s internal and external communication channels, media, congressional, public engagement and web and social media activities.
  • Oversees the Eastern Region’s Urban Connections and conservation education programs.
  • Analyzes public reaction and public opinion to ongoing initiatives and recommends changes or methods to improve understanding of regional direction, and to relate regional policies with public interests.
  • Exercises significant responsibility in dealing with officials of other units or organizations, and/or in advising management officials of higher rank.
  • Ensures communication is non-discriminatory and sensitive to all employees and publics.
