Fish and Wildlife Biologist 2

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting to fill one full time, permanent, Fish and Wildlife Biologist 2 position located in the Wildlife Program, Region 2.  The duty station is 3860 Chelan Highway, Wenatchee, WA 98801. This position works with the District Biologist to develop survey protocols, and then implements wildlife surveys to monitor populations of interest (such as game species and State and Federal priority species).  Surveys require an ability to identify game and non-game wildlife species occurring within eastern Washington and, when feasible, should include assistance from volunteers, special interest groups, and/or Advanced Hunter candidates.  Surveys are conducted via rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft, vehicle-based (road, snow or water), and walking/hiking.  These surveys will provide data for wildlife management recommendations within the agency.Duties

  • Is the primary manager and repository of survey data collected in the district. The position is tasked with working with statewide data managers to ensure quality and compatibility of data with department systems. The position is to work alongside the District Biologist to analyze data sets, summarize, and write reports as assigned.
  • Will be relied upon to respond to public on virtually all wildlife related issues within the district. Such issues include, but are not limited to, discussion of harvest regulations, hunting opportunities, wildlife viewing opportunities, injured and nuisance wildlife, wildlife rehabilitation, and wildlife identification. These communications should result in a positive view of the agency by the public through friendly and respectful interactions. The position will also be expected to develop conservation focused educational opportunities where workload allows.
  • Makes recommendations for wildlife management and recreation, which may be carried out through the regulatory process, based upon sound science (analysis of available data, literature review, professional experience, etc.). This may include recommendations on allocation of harvest among game species such as, but not limited to, mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, black bear, cougar, upland game birds, and waterfowl. The position will provide sound recommendations resulting in healthy wildlife populations while maximizing recreational opportunity to the public. This activity will be performed by working closely and cooperatively with other state and federal agencies and NGOs.
  • Serves as a source of technical information and expertise for wildlife habitat relationships, species population status, distribution, habitat protection and evaluation of potential impacts and mitigation. The position demands knowledge of current WDFW policies relative to data and data sharing, and of state and federal conservation laws.
  • Makes recommendations for habitat enhancement based upon sound science (analysis of available data, literature review, professional experience, etc.). This includes the ability to identify native and invasive plant species, a working knowledge of the conditions in which they could occur, and the ability to plan successful habitat enhancement  projects.
  • Develops expertise on various aspects of wildlife ecology and habitat relationships within the district and will participate with internal and external conservation working groups in order to support department regional/district objectives.
  • May manage wildlife populations through population augmentation (capture and translocation) to facilitate genetic diversity and to bolster dwindling wildlife populations.
  • May be expected to play a role in species recovery projects in the district.
  • May supervise temporary staff for a diversity of wildlife and habitat related projects as they arise.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, wildlife biology, wildlife ecology, natural resource science, or environmental science, and one year of professional experience in fish/ wildlife/ habitat management or research; a Master’s degree or Ph.D.in the applicable science will substitute one year of the required experience; or equivalent education/experience.

A valid Washington State or other State Driver’s License
