Job Description

 

JOB TITLE: Wildlife Program Support Intern
CLASSIFICATION:  Student Professional/Technical Worker

 

ANTICIPATED DURATION OF POSITION: Four month duration- Start date preferably May15th.

Start and end dates are flexible.

 

WORK HOURS/SCHEDULE: Work hours and days will vary per week, expecting 10-16 hours per week.

Weekends and holidays may be required.

 

SALARY: $12.32 hourly, approx. $1,570 monthly

                                               

LOCATION/JOB SITE: Cape Lookout or Nehalem

 

SUPERVISOR: Trevor Taylor, Stewardship Division Manager

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

This temporary assignment is an opportunity to provide biologist undergraduate students the opportunity to integrate academic training with on-the-job experience. The OPRD wildlife biologist provides a set of goals and tasks resulting in management recommendations, which will be based upon the use of the student’s skills and knowledge as well as being useful in a practical way for OPRD’s Western snowy plover recovery program.

  • Locate and monitor western snowy plover nests at north coast locations. Follow tracks to identify potential nests and predators. Install remote wildlife cameras to capture activities at nests
  • Provide support as needed to Wildlife Biologist and beach rangers regarding on-site HCP management needs including tasks such as installation of signage, replacement of rope fencing, collecting beach user data, etc.
  • Learn to identify Oregon coast shorebirds, including reading color bands in the field
  • Learn how OPRD administers a Habitat Conservation Plan that balances the need for resource protection with human recreation on the beach. Discuss and learn the major state and federal laws applying to threatened and endangered species management
  • Learn and implement data note taking and entry
  • Other duties as assigned, such as data entry, assisting wildlife biologist with special projects, etc.

 

REQUIRED AND PREFERRED SKILLS, EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be a high school or college student currently enrolled in or having identified a specialization field in Biology.
  • Experience with animal identification required (bird, reptile, small mammal, or other detail-oriented identification skills)
  • Experience with shorebird identification desired
  • Experience with animal tracking desired but not required

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:  

Work is primarily performed on the beach. Walks or stands for long periods of time outside in cool temperatures and strong winds.  Needs adequate vision and hearing, manual dexterity, communication and motor skills to perform the duties of the position.  Operates some office equipment and computers requiring repetitive use of arms, wrists, and hands.  May occasionally lift and move up to 35 pounds and infrequently up to 50 pounds or more with assistance.    Moves throughout facilities and grounds and may drive a motor vehicle. May travel to other parks, headquarters, or other agencies for training and meetings.  Overnight travel may be required.  Performs duties of position with or without reasonable accommodation.

 

ORIENTATION, TRAINING, AND EVALUATION:

The Wildlife Program Support Intern will receive a thorough employee orientation and written position expectations from management or lead workers. Training in shorebird identification and nest monitoring will be provided as appropriate and available.  Project and task-specific training will also be provided as needed as well as on-the-job training to use tools and systems in place.  Ongoing coaching and mentoring will be provided by your supervisor and other team members.  A final evaluation and exit interview will be provided at the end of the season.
