POSITION TITLE: INTERTIDAL SHELLFISH BIOLOGIST SUPERVISOR

LEAD SHELLFISH BIOLOGIST SALARY RANGE: $47,476 – $55,000 ANNUALLY 1 FTE

NATURE OF WORK: This position will assist in the management of the Skokomish Tribe’s shellfish program, provide technical advice and assistance to the Lead Shellfish Biologist, provide analysis of complex shellfish issues and provide the services necessary to maintain, perpetuate, and enhance the Tribe’s treaty guaranteed shellfish resources.

 

REPRESENTATIVE JOB DUTIES:

  1. Schedule and conduct inter-tidal shellfish population surveys
  2. Manage the Tribe’s private tideland program
  3. Conduct sub-tidal geoduck population surveys
  4. Participate in tribal, state and federal shellfish meetings
  5. Supervision of shellfish technicians
  6. Work closely with management to provide technical suggestions
  7. Data tabulation and analysis
  8. Oversee Tidelands database
  9. Occasional night and weekend work may be required
  10. Other duties as

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences and two years of experience working as a biologist in shellfish research/management programs. A master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for one year in shellfish research/management.
  1. Knowledge of biostatistics
    1. Must be physically fit and able to carry out demanding work in rugged terrain, in all weather conditions and on the water
      1. Must be able to demonstrate the proficient use of Microsoft Word, Excel, GIS and Trimble GPS
    2. Scuba certification or the ability to obtain a scuba certification shortly after hire
      1. Candidate must have a valid driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribe’s automobile
      2. Candidate must have an understanding of and sensitivity to the particular problems faced by the Native American
    3. Must be able to work in a team

 

  1. The selected candidate must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen test, and a complete background investigation, including relevant criminal history, prior to employment.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Ability to identify shellfish species
  2. Familiarity with Skokomish fishing areas
  3. Prior experience with small boats and trailers
  4. Familiarity with Indian treaty fishing rights
