The Opportunity:  
 
Washington State Department of Transportation is searching for an outgoing individual to join the Environmental Services Office as a Restoration Crew Lead in Tumwater, WA.
 
The Restoration Crew Lead is responsible for providing assistance and implementing management activities at environmental mitigation sites and roadside restoration sites statewide.  The incumbent of this position will possess exceptional leadership skills, ability to work with diverse groups and a passion for the environment and being outdoors.  If you have been looking to get your foot into the door as a Transportation Planning Specialist, you should not pass up this opportunity.

This position will perform the following work:

  • Responsible for site management of environmental mitigation sites statewide.
  • Work independently and as a member of a team to complete assignments.
  • Organize, manage, and troubleshoot complex projects effectively.
  • Work in uneven and steep terrain, in highway right-of-way, and in all weather conditions normal to the State of Washington.
  • Prepare and present graphic presentations on proposed and completed projects.
  • Budget Biennial, fiscal and seasonal cost of crew.
  • Provide onsite leadership and mentor restoration crew.


An ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • An Associates degree involving major study in transportation, planning, landscape architecture, environmental or urban, regional or land use planning, engineering or a related field.  OR Two years of experience working in the field to address environmental issues in conjunction with a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two years of experience as a licensed WSDA public operator and aquatic pesticide applicator, including documenting and determining rates, mixing, and multiple application methods.
  • Washington State Traffic Control Flaggers card.
  • Ability to perform field verification and collect data.
  • Carry out manual labor including lifting and manipulating up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather, uneven terrain and slopes, and work in high places wearing a fall restraint harness.
  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Prepare and review technical reports.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and well in the written form.
  • Valid driver’s license.

From the hiring authority’s perspective, the ideal candidate will also have:

  • Ability to visually identify native and non-native plant species during active growth and dormancy.
  • Two years of experience performing manual, chemical, cultural, or biological vegetation control.
  • Two years of experience installing native wetland and upland species of plants.


 
Note: This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, you are required to become a member of the PTE, Local 17, or arrange to pay that union a representational fee. The union shop requirement shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee’s initial 30 days in this classification.
