Forest Improvement Forester – Several Openings  Natural Resource Specialist 1 Recruitment # 2016-00-FIT

This recruitment may be used to fill approximately 8 to 12 Non-Permanent positions on a continual basis. Employment will be on an on-call basis for short employment periods (less than 6 months each period).

Salary Range:

$3,062 to $4,005 per month

Note: This position is represented by the WPEA. Once appointed to this position the incumbent will be required to pay union dues or other representation fees within the first 30 days of employment.

As part of a pre-sale team this position will assist the District FIT/ Silviculture Forester in implementing sound ecological forest management that generates revenue while improving forest health and habitat. This position is responsible to layout forest improvement timber (FIT) sales under the agency’s forest health program.  This work includes, locating and marking timber sale unit boundaries, tree marking, GPS mapping, locating and delineating riparian buffers or other sensitive areas, road layout, cruising, and developing detailed summary reports. In addition this position will assess the health of the stand and recommend silvicultural prescriptions and harvest strategies.


·         Knowledge of Agency policies and Forest practices requirements for wetland and stream delineation for eastern Washington

·         Able to use GPS equipment to map unit boundaries and road layouts

·         Knowledge of contracting procedures

·         Logging and forest road layout experience

·         Ability to work independently or as part of a team on assigned tasks

·         Ability to use a personal computer including the MS Word and Excel software

This level of knowledge and skill is typically achieved with:

·         A Bachelor’s degree in Forestry or a closely related Natural Resource field and one year of professional forestry experience; or

·         A two year Associate Degree in Forestry or a closely related Natural Resource field and two years of professional forestry experience; or

·         Four years of professional forestry experience; and

·         Professional experience in Washington’s eastside forests


·         One year experience in eastside timber cruising.

·         Proven familiarity with SuperAce software by Atterbury.

·         Proven experience with Forest Vegetation Simulator.

·         Training in eastside silviculture prescription development.

·         Training in timber sale preparation and documentation.

·         Training in GPS, GIS and FVS.

·         Knowledge of eastside forest management objectives and silvicultural practices


·         Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.

·         The incumbent in this position may be required to travel.

·         Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience

·         Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
