The DNR has an annual operating budget of approximately $245 million and has over 1300 permanent employees with approximately 500 additional staff hired during the summer fire season.

The Product Sales & Leasing Division is responsible for working with our region staff to generate revenue on behalf of public schools, state institutions and county services by sustainably managing Washington State Trust Lands consistent with the trust mandate and the department’s guiding principles. The Assistant Division Manager for Product Sales contributes to this important mission by guiding management on two million acres of forested State Trust Lands through a robust timber marketing and sales program generating $150M – $200M/year. Position responsibilities include but are not limited by:
- Strategic and tactical oversight of the statewide timber sales program;
- Presentation of sale proposals to the Board of Natural Resources (BNR);
- Tracking forest product market conditions/trends;
- Developing strategies to maximize revenue potential on forested State Trust Lands while meeting sustainable harvest objectives;
- Continually evaluating timber sales business processes/tools;
- Working with program/region staff to improve performance and minimize risks.
This management position oversees 10 professional staff, including four direct reports.
- Qualifications
- REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Bachelor’s degree involving major study in forestry or natural resource management;
- At least seven years forest operations experience, and three years forest products marketing experience;
- At least three years of supervisory experience;
- Experience in wood utilization and the collection/analysis of forest resource information;
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
- Ability to foster and preserve positive working relationships with internal agency staff, purchasers, regulators, and other interested stakeholders;
- Expertise in designing successful work flow processes for highly complex, multiple goal orientated projects;
- Proficient use of computers and Microsoft Office software.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Master’s degree in forest management, forest economics, or related field;
- Five or more years of forest products marketing experience;
- Expertise and practical working knowledge of negotiating, forecasting, budgeting, trend analysis, and sawmill operations
- Experience working under Washington’s Forest Practice Rules, and familiarity with the DNR State Lands Habitat Conservation Plan
SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
- This position requires the incumbent to work under minimal supervision in an assigned area of responsibility applying advanced technical knowledge and considerable discretion to evaluate and resolve complex issues such as planning and directing new market and/or strategic business development, managing financial statements and implementing prudent management accounting principles.
- This position requires driving as an essential function. Must have a valid driver’s license and at least two years of driving experience. Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately-owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements.
