SALARY RANGE:

$3,436 – $4,623 per month

TYPE OF POSITION:       

Permanent, Full-time.   This position is represented by the WFSE.

POSITION PROFILE:

This position assists the Olympic Region Natural Resources Camp Manager 3 in managing Department of Natural Resources operations at Olympic Corrections Center facility. Develops skilled, knowledgeable, motivated, and effective offender work crews to complete projects assigned to Olympic Camp and assists in Wildfire suppression efforts. This supports the DNR in fulfilling its mission in resource protection, trust land management and associated public service that builds and sustains the region’s capacity to carry out its functions.

Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two (2) years of experience supervising and managing work crews performing natural resource labor or fire suppression activities. Note: The following may be substituted for one (1) year of the supervision and management of work crew experience:
    • One (1) year of college education in a natural resource field,
    • One (1) year professional or technical experience at Forest Technician 1 level equivalent or higher, or
    • One (1) year of the above education/experience combined.

Key Knowledge and Skills

  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively in writing and orally with clients ranging from field staff and foresters; to customers, stakeholders, and other agency counterparts.
  • General forestry skills (i.e. pre-commercial thinning, tree planting, vegetation management and fire suppression.)

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in writing performance evaluations.
  • Supervision experience for 2 years or greater.
  • Twelve (12) months experience in forestry related tasks such as: pre-commercial thinning, tree planting, vegetation management and fire suppression.
  • Ability to manage a wide variety of forestry and equipment operations.
  • Promote and maintain cooperative relations with other agencies and units in joint ventures.
  • Knowledge of equipment repair, and/or shop management practices
  • Proficient in computer skills required to manage data and provide electronic correspondence to agencies, stakeholders, and customers detailing agency concerns.
  • Experience planning and assigning work, including setting performance standards and expectations
  • Experience evaluating and documenting performance
  • Experience in training and development planning
  • Knowledge of the Incident Command System
  • Experience in fire suppression tactics and prevention activities

SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Due to the sensitive and confidential nature of this position, BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS will be conducted on successful candidates.  The Prison Rape Elimination Act requires that employees with custodial contact with offenders successfully pass background checks every 5 years.
  • This position will be subject to pre-employment and reasonable suspicion drug testing.
  • Must maintain at a minimum a WCT at a level consistent to perform Liaison and Kitchen Manager Duties. Currently that requires the Light WCT which is 1-mile walk within a 16 minute time frame with no weight. This position is required to maintain availability for assignments during the fire season. If hired before passing the pack test, failure to pass the test would result in termination of probationary employment. *NOTE (If the incumbent chooses to test at the arduous level for the pack test, they will be expected to take crews out during fire season for fire suppression activities when needed.)
  • Must have valid Washington State Driver’s License, two years of driving experience and provide a driving record issued from all states in which they have held a license in during the past 3 years. This position requires driving as an essential function. Essential means that driving is a fundamental, crucial part of this position and not a marginal function.  Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately-owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements.
  • The ability to perform the duties of this position outdoors in all terrain and all weather conditions, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Duties include but may not be limited to lifting more than fifty pounds, running, bending, twisting, walking and/or climbing.
  • The incumbent in this position is required to travel.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Vacation (Annual Leave)

Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.

Social Security
