Two of our largest and most important state-wide resource protection responsibilities are fire prevention and suppression, and overseeing forest practices.
The DNR has an annual operating budget of approximately $245 million and has over 1300 permanent employees with approximately 500 additional staff hired during the summer fire season.

SALARY RANGE:$3,495 – $5,493 per month

POSITION PROFILE:
The Wildfire Operations District Manager provides the leadership and oversight for wildfire preparedness, and suppression in Southeast Region. SE Regions fire jurisdiction covers 2.4 million acres of non-federal forested lands. This position has five Natural Resource Specialist 2 direct reports. This staff is responsible for ensuring SE region has fully trained and qualified seasonal wildland fire suppression staff (29 engine crews, one 20-person hand crew) for initial and extended attack, and for communicating agency policies, procedures, and expectations to all staff. The Fire Operation District Manager is critical for building and maintaining positive relationships with federal and local wildland fire partners in order to achieve shared fire preparedness and suppression goals. - Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of wildland fire prevention and suppression practices and tactics
- Current qualification as a Division Supervisor (DIVS) or Incident Commander Type 3 (ICT3), or the ability to complete one of those ratings within one (1) year of hire.
- Knowledge of and experience in the Incident Command System.
- Knowledge in personnel management principles and merit system rules, and employee union agreements, gained through primary supervision for at least 2 years.
- Knowledge of agency policies, practices and procedures.
- Demonstrated high caliber skills in verbal and written communication
- Knowledge of leadership and organizational development principles, with demonstrated application experience
- Knowledge of natural resource management policies and issues
- Skills in agreement and contract negotiations.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:- Experience in other facets of the Incident Command System outside of operations
- Skills in dollar budget development review or the ability to gain skills within one year of hire
- Commitment to continual learning and adaption to technology advances
- Skills in evaluating others’ abilities and assessing training needs
SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS- Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
- Must pass “Arduous” WCT
- The incumbent in this position is required to travel.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately-owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements.
