Natural Resource Worker 2
(Non-Permanent)
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting to fill one (1) full time, non-permanent Natural Resource Worker 2 position located in the Wildlife Program, Region 3, Oak Creek Wildlife Area/Cowiche Unit. The duty station is located at 2990 Cowiche Mill Rd. Cowiche in Yakima County. The employment period is anticipated to start December 16, 2017 and last until March 15, 2018.

The primary purpose of the position is to assist in the elk and big horn sheep winter feeding program.  Primary duties include: loading and moving hay, equipment operation, elk fence maintenance, hazing of wildlife, ground maintenance and miscellaneous duties.

 Duties:
  • Hand feed hay bales from the back of a truck to elk and big horn sheep.
  • Load feed trucks with hay using tractors.
  • Operate feed trucks to and from feed sites on road and off road in winter conditions.
  • Operate automated feeder on trucks.
  • Count elk daily and maintain accurate records.
  • Assist with snow removal using trucks with plows in parking lots and shoveling snow from sidewalks and walkways.
  • Assist with repair and maintenance of elk fence.
  • Assist with hazing of elk that get below elk fence.
  • Interact with the public and answer questions about the Oak Creek Wildlife Area winter feeding program as needed.
 Qualifications:
Education: Graduation from high school or a GED and three months of natural resource related labor experience.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment

 Supplemental Information:
Working Conditions:
The successful candidate must be willing and able to:

  • ·Work in all weather conditions including extreme heat or snow and sometimes over difficult terrain and surfaces up to 95% of the time.
  • Work hours outside of the regular 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday work hours including weekends, holidays and occasional evenings. (Regular schedule will be 7:00am -4:00pm Thursday- Monday).
  • Lift and transport supplies and equipment weighing up to 80 pounds.
  • Safely operate motor vehicles, tractors, and ATV’s in off road setting. The incumbent must be able to drive a vehicle on primitive roads during all weather conditions in 4-wheel drive trucks and ATV’s.
  • Endure considerable physical exertions and/or muscular strain.

Required to work 40 hours per week, and overtime pay may be allowed at supervisors’ discretion and as the budget allows.
