SALARY RANGE:

$4,390 – $5,603 per month

TYPE OF POSITION:       

Permanent, Full-time. This position is not represented by a labor union.

POSITION PROFILE:

The incumbent will provide strategic and tactical oversight to the Wildland Fire program within the South Puget Sound Region. These activities are mainly related to forest wildfire: education, prevention, regulation, response preparedness and suppression. They take place on state and private forestland in King, Pierce, Kitsap, Mason, Thurston and portions of Grays Harbor, Lewis and Snohomish counties.

This position is a management and supervisory position, reporting to the Assistant Region Manager for Resource Protection and Services.  The incumbent directly supervises two Natural Resource Specialist 3’s and three Natural Resource Specialist 2’s.  He or she acts as a 2nd, 3rd or 4th level supervisor for an additional four year-round positions and thirty-seven seasonal fire engine leaders, crewpersons and dispatchers.

Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A strong commitment to fostering and contributing to a safety-based culture.
  • Current or past operational incident command system qualification as Task Force Leader (or higher).
  • Strong negotiating and conflict resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of personnel management principles and employee union agreements.
  • Knowledge of wildland fire prevention and suppression practices and tactics as applicable in Washington State.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated success in overseeing an emergency wildland fire initial response unit or organization.
  • Demonstrated skills in budget development and management.
  • Current or past operational incident command system qualification as Division/Group Supervisor (or higher).
  • Current or past incident command system qualification as Incident Commander Type 3 (or higher).
  • Multiple years of operational wildland fire experience in the western United States.
  • Multiple years of experience in successfully utilizing an operation budget exceeding $250,000 to accomplish specified objectives and deliverables.
  • Knowledge of applicable Department of Natural Resources laws, administrative codes, policy practices and procedures.
  • A bachelor’s degree in forest or natural resources management, fire science or a pertinent, related field; and  five years of professional level experience with a demonstrated progression in leadership responsibilities in the areas of natural  resources management, including wildland fire protection/suppression; or
  • An associate’s degree in forest or natural resources management, fire science or a pertinent, related field; and seven years of professional level experience with a demonstrated progression in leadership responsibilities in the areas of natural resources management, including wildland fire protection/suppression.

SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • A typical schedule consist of 40 hours/week, typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.  However, being highly flexible with scheduling is expected, particularly during the Washington “fire season” (typically mid-April – mid-October).
  • The incumbent in this position is required to travel.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function.  Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately-owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Social Security
