This announcement is for a full-time IT Specialist 2 (GIS Specialist) project position located at the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission Headquarters in Tumwater, WA.

Duties

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission acquires, operates, enhances and protects a diverse system of recreational, cultural, historical and natural sites.  The Commission fosters outdoor recreation and education statewide to provide enjoyment and enrichment for all, and a valued legacy to future generations.

The Stewardship Program implements policies and practices to enable staff and the public to understand, value and protect this legacy.  Science and communication are crucial tools in this effort; the Stewardship Program strives to provide the best science and data to those who affect State Park resources with their decisions.

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provides geospatial data services and decision support to multiple programs and to staff throughout the agency, and provides information about State Parks to external stakeholders and the public.  This position assists the agency’s GIS coordinator in matters pertaining to GIS data systems and applications.  Using the ArcGIS software, extensions, and plug-ins, provides GIS consulting, data development, analysis, cartographic and instructional materials, automates repetitive tasks and develops mobile field applications to assist GIS and other staff in developing spatial data products prepared in a timely manner. 

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Process data into feature services that can support mobile field GIS applications.
  • Use best practices to design, develop, and document custom mobile GIS applications for use in agency field activities.
  • Research optimum hardware for field use; install and test applications in appropriate hardware.
  • Provide technical assistance/support to senior GIS staff on large scale projects.
  • Respond to requests from staff for spatial data, analysis and/or mapping.
  • Using ArcGIS toolset, develop spatial data layers from multiple sources including download portals, GPS collectors, imagery, CAD, digital elevation models, and tabular data.
  • Maintain and support agency mobile applications; develop training sessions and instructional materials for staff and contractors.
  • Respond to and resolve GIS user trouble reports.
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One (1) year of information technology experience such as designing geo databases, programming GIS applications, or providing customer or technical support in GIS applications.
  • Valid driver’s license.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Natural Science, Recreation or Computer Science.
  • Coursework in Esri ArcGIS.
