WSDOT’s Environmental and Hydraulic Services (EHS) in Tumwater has a fantastic opportunity for an energetic professional who has a passion for environmental issues. In this position, you will be able to apply your current environmental policy and biology experience and training as well as develop both the breadth and depth of your professional knowledge through hands on collaboration with WSDOT staff, Federal, State, and Local agencies, Tribal governments, and the public. The Biologist will be providing services and technical expertise in support of planning, constructing and maintaining WSDOT facilities specifically supporting the natural ecology of our region and the livelihood of the public.  With this in mind, we are searching for someone who wants to make a truly rewarding contribution.

This position will:

  • Prepare environmental documentation needed in support of design/construction projects.
  • Identify and evaluate effects of construction and operation of transportation facilities on natural resources.
  • Independently prepare or review technical reports containing site inventory information, analysis of projects effects on the resources, recommendations for minimizing adverse effects, and mitigation proposals.
  • Monitor construction projects, during and after construction, to ensure compliance with environmental commitments.
  • Coordinate schedule milestones and completion dates to various business partners.
  • Assist in the development of scope, schedule, and budget of processes and projects.
  • Collect, interpret, and report field data as necessary.
  • Conduct biological inventories, complete environmental reports and prepare Endangered Species Act (ESA) documentation.
  • Audit work to ensure that all environmental laws, rules, regulations, and policies are followed on all aspects of construction process.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Applicants will be considered based on the following required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree involving major study in natural resources, biology, ecology, environmental sciences, or a closely related field of study and at least three years’ professional experience conducting biological field studies, analysis, and writing biological reports.
  • A graduate degree in one of the above fields will substitute for one year of the required experience.
  • Working knowledge of current environmental laws, regulations, and policies; familiarity with forest ecology, wetlands, wildlife, and fisheries in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Firm grasp of scientific methodologies to analyze and record existing environmental conditions through field studies.
  • Exceptional relationship management skills: ability to create effective working relationships.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Will be able to travel to and from work as well as visit various work sites as needed, safely and in a timely manner.
  • A valid driver’s license.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Two years’ experience evaluating ESA listed fish and wildlife species including developing and reviewing Section 7 consultation documents.
  • Experience and ability using ArcMap GIS system.
  • Experience using electrofishing equipment.

Note:
This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, you are required to become a member of the PTE, Local 17, or arrange to pay that union a representational fee. The union shop requirement shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee’s initial 30 days in this classification.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems‘ web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.

Social Security
