The mission of the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife (WDFW) Law Enforcement Program is to protect our natural resources and the public we serve.  Promote public education concerning outdoor safety and conservation, wildlife resources, and programs offered throughout the department.  This position supports the mission by:  Assisting Fish & Wildlife Officers in a variety of general labor duties.

Fish & Wildlife Enforcement Apprentice
Full-Time/Non-Permanent 
We are recruiting to fill four (4) full-time, non-permanent Fish & Wildlife Officer Apprentice positions within our Law Enforcement Program at the following locations:
  • Region 3 – Yakima, Washington
  • Region 4 – Mill Creek, Washington
  • Region 5 – Ridgefield, Washington
  • Region 6 – Montesano, Washington

These non-permanent positions will start in June 2018 and will last approximately three (3) months.

Duties
The incumbent will be responsible for helping Fish & Wildlife Officers to accomplish the daily and overall mission of the Law Enforcement Program and will demonstrate the Program’s core values of PRIDE; Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence.

Under the supervision of a Fish & Wildlife Sergeant will perform general labor.

Tasks include:

  • Clean various equipment, vehicles and products.
  • Taking inventory of and tracking the use of supplies.
  • Stock vehicles for patrol.
  • Move and log evidence.
  • Basic exposure with marine and/or land patrols.
  • Assist Fish & Wildlife Enforcement Officers with compliance checks.
  • File and documentation assistance.
  • Set up and take down equipment.
  • Prepare a variety of equipment for patrols and ensure equipment is stored in a clean, serviceable and ready-for-patrol condition.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions.
  • Learn the Fish & Wildlife Enforcement Regulation Manual.
  • Learn about the WDFW organization and structure.
  • Exposure to inter-jurisdictional police activities.
  • Gain an understanding of the Enforcement Police role within the WDFW organization and how it intersects with other WDFW programs.
  • Gain basic exposure to RCW 77, enabling language for the WDFW.
  • Gain basic of understanding of Fish & Wildlife species the WDFW conserves and protects.
Qualifications
  • High School/GED Graduate
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License
  • Must be able to pass a thorough background investigation

  • Show a willingness to learn and follow directions;
  • Willing and able to follow written and oral instructions;
  • Show initiative and ask plenty of questions;
  • Be dependable;
  • Able to travel statewide when necessary.

Working Conditions

  • Working in an outdoor environment.
  • May be required to work in a hostile environment, adversarial situations.
  • May be exposed to hazardous work environments and inclement weather conditions.
  • Incumbent is expected to work the same schedule as the direct supervisor.

  • Office duties require use of standard office furniture and equipment (e.g. desks, files, cabinets, computers, telephones, fax machines, copy machines, etc.)
  • Interacts with FWO’s and non-commissioned enforcement staff; headquarters and regional staff from other WDFW programs; local, state, tribal and federal law-enforcement entities; and state citizens.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
