The Waste 2 Resources (W2R) program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a  Communications Specialist (Communications Consultant 3) position. This position is located in our Headquarters Building in Lacey, WA.

The Waste 2 Resources (W2R) Program is seeking a talented, highly motivated communications professional who knows how to use data to tell a story to join our team. This person will coordinate program web content, analyze program data and assist the W2R program in developing, producing, and executing effective communication strategies that will enable our internal and external customers to have the best information available.

The ideal candidate is a good writer, has experience with web analytics and/or other digital analytic tools, has a knack for data visualization, has the ability to communicate with diverse audiences over a variety of media platforms, and is a critical thinker who can sift through data to garner insight and communicate clearly.

Agency Mission:  Ecology’s mission is to protect, preserve and enhance Washington’s environment and to promote the wise management of our air, land and water for the benefit of current and future generations.

Program Mission:  The Waste 2 Resource program guides Washington State’s recycling, waste reduction, and waste management efforts. The program’s vision is to transition to a society where waste is viewed as inefficient, and where most wastes and toxic substances have been eliminated.

Some of the key work activities for the W2R Communications Specialist position are:

  • Serves as the W2R program Web Coordinator.
  • Communicates program’s work in both written and visual form using, maps, graphics, charts, and other tools.
  • Works with subject matter experts to maintain and enhance the W2R program’s web presence by providing accurate and timely information.
  • Analyzes program data and communicates that data via the program’s website, documents, maps, and other written and visual tools.
  • This position may travel throughout the state and lift and maneuver video or audio equipment.

Opportunities to solve problems:
This position analyzes data and supports W2R program staff and managers by providing reliable information to evaluate program performance and make decisions regarding policy, budget, grant applications, workload, and resource allocation.

This position works with many people throughout the program.  The work this position will accomplish will provide the information needed for staff and management to make important decisions regarding program policy and resource allocation.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, or related field

AND

Three (3) years of writing/editing experience. Two (2) years of the experience must include some of the following:

  • Communicating complex information to the public.
  • Creating written and visual content for print, web, and social media.
  • Graphic design, web design, GIS, or data visualization.
  • Developing web content strategy and managing web content.
  • Using project-management tools to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Working effectively both as part of a team and independently.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and Adobe products, including Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere, and Photoshop.
  • Managing multiple deadlines and working with many teams concurrently.

OR

A Master’s degree in one of the above disciplines can substitute for one (1) year of experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with web content management systems.
  • Experience using Adobe creative products like Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere, Audition, and Acrobat (or similar graphic production software).
  • Experience communicating complex scientific, policy, procedure, or technical information for a wide range of audiences.
  • Experience with video/audio recording and editing.
  • A team player with excellent customer service skills and a calm, helpful manner under pressure.
  • Experience with GIS and building maps.
  • Experience communicating information related to environmental programs or issues.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
