The Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Marine Scientist (Natural Resource Scientist 2) position. This position is located at our Headquarters Building in Lacey, WA but conducts work statewide.

This position is responsible for conducting marine water quality monitoring, with a focus on ocean acidification. Responsibilities include implementing the addition of ocean acidification-relevant parameters to Ecology’s marine waters monitoring program in Puget Sound. This position is also responsible for oceanographic sampling gear preparation and use, instrument calibration (CTD and other electronic sensors), laboratory sample analyses, data analysis, and report writing. The data collected is used to determine the status and trends of marine water quality in context to ocean acidification in Washington state.

The Environmental Assessment Program provides a range of scientific, monitoring, laboratory, and quality assurance services. Its mission is to measure and assess environmental conditions in Washington State.

Some of the key work activities of the Marine Scientist position include:

Implements the component of the marine waters monitoring program that relates to ocean acidification. Performs natural resource science research to meet the specific objective of determining the current status of marine water quality in Puget Sound and the coastal estuaries, using conventional techniques.

Tasks include:

  • Using specialized knowledge of ocean acidification, implements the addition of ocean acidification-relevant parameters (alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC)) to the monthly long-term marine monitoring network.
  • As an independent marine scientist, conducts monitoring surveys by boat, including oceanographic sampling gear preparation and use, instrument calibration (CTD and other electronic sensors), and collection and processing of water samples.
  • Develops a systematic data compilation and analysis approach that leverages the full spectrum of existing inorganic carbon measurement efforts in Puget Sound and nearby coastal environments, including data from Ecology, UW, NOAA and others to determine status and trends of marine water quality.
  • Integrates marine, estuarine, and river alkalinity measurements to ensure consistency of analysis and reporting. Researches the techniques and assumptions of the different analytical methods (marine and freshwater) to present a holistic picture of OA influences.
  • Conducts comparative exploratory analysis of the Salish Sea model output and observations to uncover notable features or relationships to be further investigated.
  • Collaborates with the Salish Sea modeling team and the ocean acidification science community to assure consistent communication and effective actions both inside and outside the agency.
  • Writes standard operating procedures, quality assurance project plans (QAPPs), and scientific reports.
  • Uses software programs and databases for data management, analysis, mapping, and report preparation.

Please note this is a project position that is scheduled to end March 31, 2020.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s Degree with a major study in Marine Science, Oceanography, or other closely allied marine science field

AND

Three (3) years of professional research work experience in Marine Science or Oceanography, related to ocean acidification.

A Master’s Degree will substitute for two (2) years of experience and a Ph.D. will substitute for all of the required experience, provided the field of major study was in the specific specialty.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. degree in Marine Science or Chemical Oceanography.
  • Experience in collecting, processing, and analyzing marine samples for ocean acidification related parameters.
  • Experience conducting field sampling from a boat and seaplane under a variety of conditions.
  • Experience operating and calibrating a CTD.
  • Ability to work with large environmental datasets.
  • Scripting skills preferably in MATLAB and R.
  • Ability to use, interpret, analyze and produce geographic information datasets.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.

Social Security
