PURPOSE:
Gain greater understanding of working with elected officials and assisting in drafting public policy proposals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • This position will work closely with elected Port Commissioners and Policy staff to focus on supporting Commission priorities.
  • The position will include drafting policy proposals, attending public events, drafting follow-up memos, and working with Port staff to develop recommendations for next steps.
  • Administrative duties are likely to make up a small portion of the job responsibilities.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to write clear, concise memo’s that reflects Commissioner direction and discussions.
  • Ability to professionally represent a public organization in a public setting and ensure elected officials expectations are met at an event or speaking engagement.
  • The ability to organize events and engaging in group discussion.
  • Skilled in research methods and the ability to write recommendations to support Commissioner priority areas.
  • Willingness to take on any task as needed to achieve shared goals.
  • Working knowledge of operating in a public setting with elected officials or representing organizations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be enrolled in a Graduate degree program or recently graduated (interns are eligible to work up to, but no more than 12 months post-graduation) with a graduate degree in Business, Public Administration, Public Policy and/or a related field; or
  • Students that are a minimum of an undergraduate senior student with confirmation of acceptance into a graduate program for Fall 2017 or sooner will be considered upon receipt of acceptance into their respective Graduate programs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Interest or experience working with elected officials or C-suite executives.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: To be considered, applicants must submit the following information: 1) Fill out a Port of Seattle employment application. 2) Proof of internship eligibility attached to the application (current official or unofficial transcripts). 3) Provide a cover letter and resume and attach them to each application. The cover letter should explain how the internship fits with your education, learning plans and/or future career path. 4) A list of specific internship learning objectives attached to the application. 5) Optional, but encouraged: Work references and/or letters of recommendation from a school faculty member. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: In order to be eligible for an internship, applicants must be enrolled in school, about to enroll in school, or a recent graduate from an accredited degree program. Candidates must be able to maintain student status in an Undergraduate program throughout the duration of the internship unless recently graduated and are eligible for up-to twelve months post-graduation. Interns will be subject to all Port policies and procedures.
Weekly Standard Hours:
This is a part-time internship during the school year, full-time summer internship position. Normal work hours will be scheduled Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Specific schedule will depend on the successful candidate.

Overtime Eligible:
This position is eligible for overtime pay.

Work Environment:
Will generally work in an office environment.
