State Parks is governed by a board of seven volunteer citizens appointed by the Governor. Commission members serve staggered six-year terms, setting public policy and guiding the agency. This recruitment is for two non-permanent Parks Interpretive Assistant positions at Cape Disappointment State Park, located in Pacific County, Washington.

The duration of these non-permanent appointments is June 1, 2016 – September 15, 2017. 

Duties
Under the supervision of the Long Beach Area Interpretive Specialist, the Interpretive Assistant assists with the research and reference work related to the site interpretive master plan, publications and educational outreach program. Gives cultural and natural history program presentations and supports regional activities related to statewide interpretive programs.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Act as an interpretive resource for visitors, greets tourists, students and others.
  • Assist the Interpretive Specialist with research and reference work relating to site Interpretive Master Plan, educational outreach programs and events.
  • Perform and assist with guided tours and campfire programs.
  • Assist with the daily operation of the gift shop.
  • Assist in the research and development of interpretive material, exhibits and programs.
  • Assist in the routine maintenance of site interpretive facilities and resources.
  • Perform grounds maintenance work such as mowing lawns and assisting with restroom cleaning.
Qualifications
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Four (4) months experience providing interpretive programs or demonstrations on historical or science based subjects in a public setting.

AND

Ability to work with computers, mobile devices, and other forms of modern technology.
Ability to write and speak in the English language.
Valid drivers license.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems‘ web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.

Social Security
