This unpaid position is responsible for helping the Volunteer Coordination team to continually improve our services by helping to support food bank volunteers in completing basic everyday tasks of stocking that are integral to the services the food bank provides.

It requires the ability to work independently and with others, attention to detail, strong communication skills and a willingness to apply oneself to a variety of tasks that support the needs of the organization. Day-to-day tasks might include learning how to stock and sort, and then supporting a variety of volunteers to complete these tasks effectively, updating and developing a handbook for volunteer tasks, and accepting donations. Other volunteer support related projects are possible, based on intern focus and skill-set. A genuine interest in direct service with volunteers from a wide variety of backgrounds is necessary for this position. This includes groups of special needs students, who come in with their own support staff but need food- bank-specific direction.

Responsibilities (not exclusive):

Volunteer Support
Welcoming volunteers, answering basic questions, and introducing groups and individuals to specific tasks such as stocking, sorting, or re-packaging products.

Volunteer Support Handbook
Updating and developing a handbook that outlines the basic information necessary for completing a variety of tasks that need to be completed by volunteers on a regular basis.

Volunteer Coordination Support Projects
Could include developing more organizational tools to help make volunteers jobs simpler, as well as some administrative support such as data entry.

Workplace Maintenance
Tidying, organizing, emptying trash, and generally maintaining a welcoming and attractive environment.

Knowledge and Skills: Success in this role requires strong communication and organizational skills, cultural sensitivity, maturity, adherence to policy and procedure, creativity and discretion. It also requires the ability to understand and apply the philosophy and mission of the Thurston County Food Bank. Helpful for this role would be some work or educational experience in organizing groups.
