Forest Crew Supervisor – Correctional Facilities (FCS-CF)

SALARY RANGE:

$3,123 – $4,191 per month

TYPE OF POSITION:        

Two positions available. (1)Permanent, Full-time (2)Permanent, Career Seasonal. These positions are represented by the WPEA.
Important Note:   Once appointed to this position the incumbent will be required to pay union dues or other representation fees within the first 30 days of employment.

POSITION PROFILE:

These Forest Crew supervisor (FSC) positions plan, direct, supervise, train, and evaluate the daily work activities of a 10-12 person offender work crew. These Forest Crew Supervisors lead the crew in all aspects of wildfires suppression, traveling to various fires inside and outside of the Olympic Region. These positions train and oversee the crews completion of silvicultural work including planting trees, pre-commercial thinning and vegetation management and noxious weed removal. These Forest Crew supervisors also guide the crews in litter pick-up, road maintenance, and other general forestry related jobs. These positions will need to accurately document daily safety meetings, work progress, offender counts, and offender behavior.

Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Possess a valid unrestricted Washington State Driver’s License and have two years of driving experience
  • 18 months Forest crafts experience
  • 6 months of lead work experience

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated math and reasoning skills.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Forest data compilation, natural resource management methods, practices and techniques;
    • Basic fire behavior and management;
    • Recreation use and management;
    • Use of equipment and tools; and
    • Maintaining safe working conditions.
  • Work experience that demonstrates:
    • Leadership skills;
    • Conflict resolution;
    • Interpersonal skills, and
    • Professionalism.
  • Experience in:
    • Forest seedling planting, forest plantation vegetation management, and pre-commercial thinning;
    • Recreation trail and facilities construction and maintenance;
    • Chainsaw and hand tools use and maintenance; and
    • Wildland fire suppression.
    • Operating a pickup truck in a forest environment
    • Experience/training with computer programs
  • Technical/professional forestry knowledge and skills:
    • Acquired through the completion of a 2 or 4 year degree in forest management or closely related programs of study.

SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function.  Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately-owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
  • This position is subject to pre-employment and reasonable suspicion drug testing.
  • Must pass Criminal Justice Records Check and Drug screening. Due to the sensitive and confidential nature of this position, BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS will be conducted on successful candidates.
  • Successful candidates will be required to meet physical fitness standards for arduous level wildfire suppression work. This requires passing a work capacity test by completing within 45 minutes a 3-mile hike carrying a 45-pound pack. Supervised tests are administered by the Department of Natural Resources. Offers of employment are contingent on passing the arduous level pack test. If hired before passing the pack test, failure to pass the test would result in termination of probationary employment. (For promotional candidates, failure would result in reversion from trial service employment.)
  • Licensed as Herbicide Applicator or ability to obtain within six months or employment with Laws and Safety, Right-of-Way, and Agricultural weed endorsements.
  • The ability to perform the duties of the position outdoors in all terrain and all weather conditions, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Duties include but may not be limited to lifting more than fifty pounds, running, bending, twisting, walking and/or climbing.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.

Social Security
