SALARY RANGE:

$4,623 – $6,217 per month

TYPE OF POSITION:       

Permanent, Full-time.   This position is represented by the WFSE.

POSITION PROFILE:

This licensed engineering geologist will work as part of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Forest Practices Science Team. The position provides professional consultation to DNR Region Forest Practices Foresters and the Forest Practices Program on the effects of specific proposed forest management activities on potentially unstable slopes and landforms including groundwater recharge areas for glacial deep-seated landslides, erosion potential, and hydrologic impacts for proposed forest practices activities, and review of channel migration zones (CMZ) and wetlands on proposed Forest Practices Applications (FPAs).
This position performs office and field review of proposed activities in FPAs to evaluate how well potentially unstable slopes and landforms were identified and addressed in relation to the requirements of the forest practices rules. This includes participating on interdisciplinary teams to observe geologic conditions and potential impacts of proposed forest practices; independently reviewing proposed forest practices activities within and immediately adjacent to the proposed forest practices activity area; and providing training for the Forest Practices Program, external stakeholders and the public. This post is responsible for written reports/maps of FPA review findings and may testify in forest practices enforcement actions.
This position may attend scientific conferences and meetings; present research results and recommendations; and attend technical trainings and workshops to maintain professional standing.

Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Hydrology, Soil Science, Forestry or closely related natural resources field.
  • An Engineering Geologist License (LEG) in good standing in the State of Washington or a state recognized in the Department of Licensing reciprocity process (any state that meets the guidelines established for the State of Washington Engineering Geologist License); with
  • Three (3) years of professional experience evaluating potentially unstable slopes in the forested environment as required by WAC 222-10-030(5).
  • Understands basic principles and concepts of scientific research, sampling, statistical inference, and quality assurance/quality control.
  • Experience with public speaking and basic concepts of effective formal and informal presentations of information to groups and training sessions.
  • Participate in a collaborative and professional manner with small groups of representatives having various perspectives from diverse backgrounds such as industrial and non-industrial landowners, tribes, and other state and federal agencies.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Geology, Hydrology, Soil Science, Forestry or closely related natural resources field or significant coursework beyond the bachelor degree in these areas of expertise.
  • Five years of experience evaluating unstable slopes in the forested environment.
  • Ability to identify the presence of and delineate channel migration zones in according to Washington’s Forest Practices rules.
  • Be familiar with Pacific Northwest logging systems, forest road design and construction techniques, and silvicultural practices.

SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Ability to work on steep, uneven terrain in all weather conditions; and in dense and fallen vegetation and trees. The person must be able to traverse unstable substrates and fluvial environments safely. There may be exposure to sun, insects, and wildlife. The person will usually be in company of others, but at times alone.
  • This position is required to occasionally travel throughout the state of Washington with most travel limited to the region of the assigned duty station.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
