SALARY RANGE:

$3,054 – $4,085 per month

TYPE OF POSITION:        

Two positions available. Permanent, Full-time. This position is represented by the WPEA.
Important Note:   Once appointed to this position the incumbent will be required to pay union dues or other representation fees within the first 30 days of employment.

POSITION PROFILE:

This position supports the DNR and the Landowner Assistance Section by providing hazardous fuels reduction, forest health improvement and wildfire prevention education to the public. This position reports to a Natural Resource Specialist 3, Fire Prevention Forester, and interacts with the region stewardship coordinator, region fuels specialist, region entomologist, WSU Extension foresters, Natural Resource Conservation Service foresters. As assigned by the Natural Resource Specialist 3, this position will perform community and residential risk assessments, help develop Fire wise plans and implement fuels reduction, forest health and fire prevention projects. This includes contacting communities and landowners, conduction assessments, laying out projects, performing compliance with contractors and reporting accomplishments. By performing these actions effectively, efficiently and professionally, this position supports the DNR in fulfilling its mission of providing leadership in creating a sustainable future of natural resources for all citizens.

Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of the forestry profession as applied to Inland Northwest which includes the fundamentals of silviculture of northwest species, cruising methods, logging methods, reforestation, water quality, watershed management, fuels management, pre-commercial thinning, forest health (insect and disease) and brief understanding of smoke management.
  • Knowledge of wildland fire behavior (S-190 or higher) and fire suppression techniques (S-130 or higher)
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Computer skills such as with Word and Excel.
  • Ability to organize documents, spreadsheets, pictures, etc. on the hard drive of the computer.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a natural science, which includes coursework in Forestry related courses.
  • One year of professional forestry management experience at the entry level.
  • Desire and ability to be trained to NWCG “Red Card” qualification level of Single Resources Boss rating or higher, and maintain that level of certification.
  • Knowledge of the incident command system.
  • Proven ability to use recreational grade GPS receivers.
  • Proven ability to use ESRI GIS software.

SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Position’s assigned duty station is the Deer Park Work Center. Work setting is approximately 70% field and 30% office. Incumbent is expected to traverse uneven terrain in all types of weather conditions. The majority of work is performed with private landowners in unimproved areas within the Region.
  • The incumbent in this position is required to travel. Position requires a significant amount of time in the field traveling alone between program activities, office and work centers.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function.  Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements.
  • Position is assigned an agency four-wheel drive vehicle. Incumbent utilizes agency radio equipment and cell phone for communication in the field. Field duties require frequent use of GPS, digital camera, compass, topographic maps and aerial photos. Performs routine maintenance on vehicle, tools, and equipment.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
