The Water Resources (WR) program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Hydrogeologist (Hydrogeologist 2) (In-Training) position. This position is located in our Central Regional Office (CRO) in Union Gap, WA.

The Hydrogeologist position is located in the Technical Unit. This position is responsible for providing technical services such as data collection, field measurements, hydrogeologic data analysis and preparation of technical reports under the review of a licensed hydrogeologist. The Technical Unit is primarily responsible for investigation of the hydrogeology associated with the water right applications and providing evaluations and conclusions regarding water availability, water source delineation, and the potential for impairment to other rights.
We are looking for applicants who possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work well with others, possess strong organizational skills, are detail oriented and are willing to travel throughout the state.

Agency Mission:  Ecology’s mission is to protect, preserve and enhance Washington’s environment and to promote the wise management of our air, land and water for the benefit of current and future generations.
Program Mission: The mission of the Water Resources (WR) program is to manage water resources to meet the current and future needs of the natural environment and Washington’s communities.

Some of the key work activities at the Hydrogeologist 2 level (Under the technical review of a Licensed Hydrogeologist) include:

  • Provides professional hydrogeologic assistance to the Permitting Unit to support water right management decisions.
  • Reviews, analyzes, and periodically collects hydrogeologic data.
  • Determines the hydrogeologic characteristic, such as seasonal water level variability, hydraulic conductivity, storage coefficients, direction of groundwater flow, and well interference.
  • Performs field investigations that may require stream flow measurements, aquifer tests, geologic mapping, aerial photograph analysis, water level measurements; and negotiating with water right applicants, protesting parties and their hired consultants.
  • Utilizes PC based computer models to evaluate well/stream relationships, aquifer characteristics and well interference information, prepared written technical reports and reviews those submitted by consultants.
  • Reviews hydrogeologic reports and water right mitigation proposals.
  • Provides professional hydrogeologic  assistance in reviewing the site suitability, monitoring plans, and estimations of increased groundwater storage associated with exempt well mitigation and stream flow restoration proposals within Ecology’s Central Region.

The goal class for this position is a Hydrogeologist 2 (HG2). We will consider applicants who meet the requirements for the Hydrogeologist 1 and 2 levels. If the finalist meets the requirements for the HG1 level then they will be hired in at that level and will be placed into a training program to become an HG2 within a specified period of time.

Qualifications
 

Required Qualifications:

At the Hydrogeologist 1 Level – Pay Range 52 ($3795 – $4977) Monthly

A Bachelor’s degree involving a major study in hydrogeology, hydrology, geology or closely allied field

AND 

One (1) year of professional experience as a hydrogeologist, hydrologist, geologist or closely allied professional or one (1) year as a Hydrogeologist Trainee.

A Master’s degree with a major study in hydrogeology, hydrology, geology, or closely allied field will substitute for the experience.

At the Hydrogeologist 2 Level – Pay Range 58 ($4399 – $5770) Monthly

A Bachelor’s degree involving a major study in hydrogeology, hydrology, geology, or closely allied field

AND

Two (2) years of professional experience as a hydrogeologist, hydrologist, geologist or closely allied profession or one (1) year as a Hydrogeologist 1.

A Master’s degree with a major study in hydrogeology, hydrology, geology or closely allied field will substitute for the two (2) years of experience.

Desired Qualifications:

Ability to develop and apply standard methods in determination of ground water movement and storage, groundwater recharge, discharge, areal extent and thickness of geologic formations, hydraulic conductivities, boundary conditions and other aquifer properties, stream flow characteristics, well construction, radial flow to a well, and well interference.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems‘ web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
