Position:               Pathways Program Specialist
Salary:                  $48,000 – $60,000 / year
Reports to:           Program Manager – Educator Pathways Programs, Evaluation, and Research

Agency Profile

First created in 2000 as an advisory board to state policymakers, since 2006 the Professional Educator Standards Board has held full authority and responsibility for the preparation, certification, continuing education and assignment of all certificated educators in Washington State. A board of practicing educators, the mission of the PESB is to ensure all certificated educators:

  • Are competent in the professional knowledge and practice for which they are certified;
  • Have a foundation of skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to help students with diverse needs, abilities, cultural experiences, and learning styles meet or exceed the state learning goals; and
  • Are committed to research-based practice and career-long professional development.

In addition to its regulatory policy responsibilities, the PESB and its staff provide direct administrative oversight of all state-approved educator preparation programs, and operate numerous programs related to educator recruitment, alternative pathways into the profession, educator workforce development, and assessments for educator certification.

Position Overview

The Pathways Program Specialist will have a primary role in promoting and supporting the needs of the Educator Pathways and Workforce Development team within PESB. Reporting to the Program Manager – Educator Pathways Programs, Evaluation, and Research, the individual will be expected to develop an in depth understanding of the Educator Pathways and Workforce Development programs and projects to carry out the responsibilities of this position. Individual will work with all staff to support the Board’s goals and objectives to ensure that the pathways to teaching in Washington’s public schools are available to all who are interested.

Duties
Key Responsibilities

Communications

  • Report creation for internal and external audiences
  • Newsletter content development
  • Presentation development for and delivery to external audiences
  • Infographics and other material development, explaining Educator Pathways and Workforce Development programs through visuals and text
  • Educator Pathways and Workforce Development website content updates
  • Individual educator assistance
  • Building greater cohesion within the Educator Pathways and Workforce Development team

Event Coordination

  • Program site visits
  • Meetings, including but not limited to quarterly meetings of the Educator Pathways Advisory Group
  • Conferences, including collaborative meetings in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Grants Support

  • Progress monitoring and reporting
  • Report development
  • Contracts assistance
  • Grant research and writing
  • Materials development
  • Qualitative and quantitative data collection and synthesis
Qualifications
Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Public Policy, Journalism, or related field
  • At least three (3) years experience in community outreach, marketing agency services, or event planning
  • At least one (1) year working with grant or contract implementation, tracking, and reporting
  • Experience working in the field of K-12 education preferred

Candidate Profile

  • Excellent written, spoken, and interpersonal communications skills
  • Familiarity with governmental policy making processes
  • Skilled in print and online publishing applications, including Microsoft Office Suite and Google G-Suite applications
  • Familiarity with writing and editing material for publication in print and electronic media
  • Familiarity with effective website content
  • Demonstrated experience working and interacting with culturally diverse people from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Willingness and ability to take on the variety of small research and other projects that regularly emerge in an environment with diverse demands and a very small staff
  • Ability to demonstrate consistent attention to detail
  • Ability to complete complex tasks with limited supervision
Supplemental Information
Compensation

The annual compensation range for the position is $48,000 – $60,000 per year and will depend upon experience, educational background, and qualifications. Washington State has a generous benefit package including health, dental, and life insurance, retirement, and an optional deferred compensation program. This position serves at the pleasure of the Executive Director and is exempt from civil service laws.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems‘ web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.

Social Security
All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.
