The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is currently recruiting for a Park Ranger 1 position located at Sunset Bay State Park in Coos Bay, Oregon.

  • This position is a permanent, full time position, represented by the Service Employee International Union (SEIU).
  • This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified applicants and may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.

What you will do:
The Ranger 1 position is responsible to perform, conduct and oversee a variety of tasks in order to protect, maintain, operate and repair state park lands, natural and cultural resources, structures, facilities, equipment and systems by using skills in building trades, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting and landscape maintenance, as well as specialized program skills (e.g.: resource interpretation, cultural and natural resource restoration, utility infrastructure operation, park rule enforcement, etc.) related to the maintenance and operations of OPRD programs, within the Sunset Bay Management Unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

OR

  • An Associate’s degree in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management or Environmental Studies and 6 months of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

NOTE: A higher level degree may substitute for the Associate’s degree. There is no substitute for the 6 months experience.

DESIRED ATTRIBUTES

  • Experience and skills in maintenance and repair of motorized equipment.
  • Experience and skills in landscape, facilities, and building maintenance in a park setting.
  • Experience and skills in herbicide/pesticide application.
  • Experience and skills in maintenance and operations of sewer systems.

  • Experience providing exceptional customer service working with the public or in a public setting.
  • Experience working with, recruiting, coordinating, training and supervising volunteers.
  • Skills in resolving customer complaints related to overnight camping and park rule interpretation.
  • Skill in evaluating situations, applying rules and guidelines, determining and carrying out appropriate course of action to achieve desired results.
  • Skills and knowledge of basic park resource and facility operations and maintenance and/or resource interpretation.
  • Skill in maintaining composure and taking appropriate action during emergency or emotionally-charged situations.
  • Skill in the use of a personal computer.

Additional Position Requirements:

  • Have a criminal history background check that meets OPRD criteria at the time of hire and throughout employment.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of hire and throughout employment with a driving record that meets OPRD standards.
  • Must wear OPRD supplied uniform and comply with appearance code while on duty.
  • Must comply with and adhere to applicable federal, state, local, and agency rules, laws, standards, procedures and policies.
  • Obtain and maintain one or more of the following after appointment:
    • First Aid/CPR Certification
    • OPRD Enforcement Officer Status
    • Department of Corrections Crew Supervisor training
    • Pesticide/Herbicide Applicators License
    • Water Treatment and Distribution Certification
    • Wastewater Treatment and Collection Certification
