The Opportunity:

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is looking for an experienced individual in the area of field exploration to fill the role of Field Exploration Supervisor.  This is an excellent position for an individual that likes to be a hands on manager that likes to provide their expertise in the fields of soil investigation and soil classification.

The Field Exploration Supervisor will oversee the work of one or more three-man drill crews. The incumbent will coordinate and oversee multiple crews simultaneously performing statewide field testing and sampling for geotechnical engineering purposes.

This position will perform the following work:

  • Supervise and direct multiple field exploration crews within the Geotechnical Office’s Engineering Geology Section, Field Exploration Unit.
  • Conducts site review of geotechnical field exploration projects to determine site access requirements, site preparation needs, equipment needs, right-of-entry requirements, and need for environmental permits.
  • Provide technical expertise to field exploration crews on more difficult or environmentally sensitive site access, specialized field testing and sampling, and installation of field instrumentation.
  • Implement the quality assurance program to ensure that field exploration work produced meets the highest standards, and is cost effective.

An ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • One year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2 or equivalent OR;
  • Six years of geotechnical field exploration experience (five of those years as a licensed geotechnical driller).
  • Valid Department of Ecology Resource Protection Operators License.
  • The ability to travel statewide with potential overnight stays.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems‘ web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.

Social Security
All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.

Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Paid sick leave may be used for reasons included in WAC 357-31-130.
